Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Finney-87

Jeremiah Finney was born in mid-August of 1662 at Barnstable, Plymouth, a son of John Finney, Sr., and Elizabeth (Bailey) Finney. He became a shipmaster, and in early January of 1684, he married Esther Lewis at Bristol, then a part of Rhode Island. He died at Bristol, by that time a town of Massachusetts Bay, in February of 1743.[1]

Marriage

7 JAN 1683/4 Bristol, Rhode Island
Husband: Jeremiah Finney
Wife: Esther Lewis
Child: Mary Finney
Child: Hannah Finney
Child: Mehitable Finney
Child: John Finney
Child: Rebecca Finney
Child: Esther Finney
Child: John Finney
Child: Abigail Finney

Hester Lewis (evidently christened thus; later recorded as Esther) is presumed to be the first and only wife of Jeremiah Finney. An unsourced first marriage, originally shown in this profile, to Mercy Watts has been removed; the alleged bride would only have reached the age of eighteen by 1683, and within months, Jeremiah wed Esther. Mercy Watts in fact married Jeremiah's brother Joshua Phinney in 1688; also, a Mercy ("Mersey") Finney is shown as the wife of Joseph Finney of Plymouth as of 15 June 1693 [2]. These are highly probable sources of the confusion.
