"Lutheran missionaries Johann Baucke and Johann Engst from central Europe established a mission on the north coast of Chatham Island, at the foot of Maunganui bluff, in the late 1860s. Burnt pipi shells were used to provide mortar for the construction, which was of local stone and akeake timber. Although the mission was not successful, the Baucke family stayed on the island for some years, and the building was still standing in 2020. It has a category one listing from Heritage New Zealand."
