Nach fünfjähriger Stadtpfeiferlehre in Wesselburen, 1826 Übersiedlung nach Hamburg, dort Tätigkeit als freier Musikant in Gaststätten, seit 1835 als Hornist im Bürgermilitär, seit 1853 Kontrabassist am Stadttheater und von 1864 bis 1870 Kontrabassist bei den Hamburger Philharmonischen Konzerten. 9.6.1830 erste Eheschließung mit der in Hamburg ansässigen Näherin Christiane Nissen (gest. 1865), 22.3.1866 zweite Eheschließung mit Karoline Paasche, verw. Schack (erste Ehe) und Pomplun (zweite Ehe), aus Pinneberg; Vater des Komponisten Johannes Brahms.

Musician. Born Johann Jakob Brahms in Holstein, Hamburg, one of three children of Christiane Magdalene Asmus and Johann Brahms an inn and shopkeeper. He was apprenticed to the town piper in Wesselburen, and in 1826 he moved to Hamburg, where he worked as a musician playing in beer gardens. In 1830, he married a seamstress, Johanna Christiane Hendeike Nissen, with whom he had three children, including the composer and virtuoso, Johannes Brahms. In 1835, he was employed as a horn player in the Bürgermilitär. In 1853, he played double bass at the Stadttheater. From 1864 to 1870 he was the double bass player at the Hamburg Philharmonic. After his first wife's death in 1865, he married Karoline Louise Paasche. He died at age 65 in Hamburg.
