Johannes Rommel (also known as Johann Romel, Jean Romel, Jean Baptiste Romel) left Kirchardt, Germany on May 7, 1720 with his family including his father Heinrich, mother Anne Marie, his first wife of only a few months Anne Marie Rau and his sister Souzanne. Their destination was Lorient, France to board a ship as recruits for John Law's concession to Louisiana. Johannes's name quickly became Jean Baptiste Rome, Rom, Romel, etc. in French Louisiana. He was born about 1699 in Kirchadrt, Baden, Palatinate, Germany.[1]

On 2 May 1720, Johannes Rommel and Anna Margaretha Rau were married at Karlsruhe, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. Shortly after they married on November 14, 1720, he embarked on the ship "Les Duex Freres" which did not list his father's name--Heinrich apparently died on the journey from Germany to France. The ship left France shortly after the list was compiled and arrived in Biloxi on March 1, 1721. Of the 213 people who sailed on this ship to Louisiana only 40 survived. [Robichaux cites Forsyth and Zeringue, German Pest Ships, p. 7]. It is possible that Anna Margaretha was one of the unfortunate passengers who didn't survive or who died shortly after arrival.

The passengers from this ship joined with other Germans and journeyed by small boats up the Mississippi River to John Law's concession. A few months later they returned downriver to settle 2 villages between what is now Lucy and Killona. His first son, Jean Adam, was born in 1726, with his mother listed as Anna Marguerite Steiger. Johannes' first wife must have died between March 1721 and 1724.

Marriage records show Anna Margaretha Steiger married him in 1724. Together they had 9 children. In a census complied on November 12 and 13, 1724, Johannes was listed as "Jean Romel" 24 years old, married with no children, occupation tailor. He had 1.5 linear arpents (300 arpents=100 hectares=252 acres), had been in residence 3 years, had harvested 13 barrels of rice and corn, and owned 1 pig. The child's mother and sister were not listed as living in Johanne's household. They may have died. In a 1731 census, he was listed as having 3 children and 2 cows.[2]

1724, Johannes was listed as Household No. 26, "Jean Romel" 24 years old, with a wife, no children, occupation tailor. He had 1.5 linear arpents (300 arpents=100 hectares=252 acres), had been in residence 3 years, had harvested 13 barrels of rice and corn, and owned 1 pig. His mother and sister were not listed as living with him. They may have died. [3][4]

On January 1, 1726, at the village of Allemands, a Jean Rollin and his wife were enumerated. It isn't certain that this is the same man.[5]

On July, 1727, Jean Romain, his wife, and one child are living on the left bank ascending.[6][7]

Baptism: 20 Jun 1728 Jean Rommel baptized. This date is unsourced but left here pending a source. According to researcher Albert J. Robichaux, Jr. who traveled to France and Germany seeking documentation of the immigrants to Louisiana, no baptism for Johannes was found. He did find a marriage document for Johannes and Anna Maria Rau(in). Baptism records were found for 3 siblings born 1691, 1697 and Nov. 1700. At this period in Louisiana history, those given lands to settle were required to be baptized in the Catholic Church so it is certainly possible that he was baptized around that time.[8]

In a 1731 census, he was listed as having 3 children and 2 cows.

Census: 1766 [9]

DEATH on or before 19 Dec. 1771. [10]
