John Adair's Will
of sound and disposing mind and memory.....
Sons John and Alexander will have "my body decently interred in the burying-ground where my son and two daughters are buried"......
to my two sons John Adair and Alexander Adair all my stock of Horse, Cattle, sheep and Hogs..... also all my money, Bonds, notes and accounts... out of which funeral charges and debts to be paid.
to my son John Adair all farming utensils of every kind also all my household and kitchen furniture.
To my son Samuel Adair $50.00 and a bond of $90.00 which I hold on him-- the $50 to be paid at expiration of 2 years after my death by sons John and Alexander.
To my son James Adair $60.00 to be paid by my sons John and Alexander 2 years after my death.
To my daughter Mary Adair - McCorkle $40.00 and a bond of 430.00 I hold on her husband executed by him to my son William. Adair deceased-- the $40 to be paid by sons John and Alexander 2 years after my death.
Tract of land I now reside on to be divided as follows: Beginning at 2 small black oaks on the line north from the house, South West course to a white oak near the Black Smith shop, With general course of present land to a white oak near the former Boat yard. South East course to a red oak and chestnut marked in the line between me and John Chaplin now Quinton Armstrong, following all lines to beginning.
To my son Alexander Adair all my lands lying on the South east side of said dividing line to him and his heirs forever.
I charge my son John Adair with support and maintenance of my beloved wife Mary in decent and comfortable manner during her life at her death he and my son Alexander to have her body decently buried at the same place with my own.
I charge that my son John shall keep my daughter Jane a comfortable home at my dwelling house as long as she lives or chooses to remain with him.... to keep her decently... furnish good clothes and a horse and saddle to ride when she wishes to go to church or to visit her friends. If she married she is bequeathed $150.00 to be paid in equal portions by my sons John and Alexander in 90 days after her marriage, $50 in money and $100 in property. My daughter Jane having taken care of her "neace Marthay G. Leckey" for about 4 years for which keeping her I claim payment from her father James Lackey Jr.
I will and bequeath my daughter Jane whatever sum I may receive from said Leckey for keeping his daughter with interest.
Appoint two sons John Adair and Alexander Adair executors without security.

Born in Rockbridge County, Va., May 22, 1852; son of James Adair, who was born in Rockbridge County, Va., December 22, 1812; grandson of John Adair, Sr., who was born in Pennsylvania October 4, 1780, and was brought by his father into Rockbridge, then taken into East Tennessee; after his father's death, at Jonesboro, he returned to Rockbridge County, Va.; great-grandson of James Adair, who with his wife (Polly) and two brothers, emigrated from North of Ireland, vicinity of Londonderry, and located in Pennsylvania; dry goods merchant/ member and deacon in Presbyterian Church, Lexington.
