Biography
John Anthony, I was born in 1710 in Falls Plantation, New Kent, New Kent, Virginia, USA. His parents were Mark Anthony and Isabella Hester Anthony.
John married Elizabeth Bettie Anthony (Banks) in 1745 in Evington, Albemarle, Virginia, United States. Together they had the following children:
- Elizabeth Banks Irvine (Anthony);
- Sarah Banks Talbot (Anthony);
- Lucy Banks Jones (Anthony);
- John Anthony, Jr.
He died in 1760 in Evington, Bedford, Virginia, United States.

- The Patriot of the REV. WAR ** It was John Anthony, Jr that was the Patriot, not his father, this is the confusion of a few people, that have confused another. John Anthony, Sr, and attached him as the son of Mark Anothony and Isabella Hart. - That man was a Patriot, a small landholder in North Carolina, and didn't marry Elizabeth Banks and not well-documented.

He served from January 1777 until the end of the war. ~SAR (Sons of American Revolution) #P-104167 & ~DAR (Daughters of American Revolution) #002884. **
John was the son of ~ “John Anthony, SR.” (1715 VA—1760 VA) & ~ “Elizabeth (Betty) Banks” (1719 VA—1801 VA).
John SR. & Elizabeth had 1 son (John JR.) & 3 daughters.
Their 4 Children & JOHN JR.’s SIBLINGS:
~ John Anthony, JR. m: Susan Austin.
~ Lucy Anthony m: Thomas Jones.
~ Elizabeth Anthony m: William Irvine; m: Robert Cowan.
~Sarah Anthony m: John Talbot.
These 4 children were listed in John SR.’s Will of 1760 which was proven on 11-24-1760. Daughter Elizabeth is married to Irvine then. By 1801 & Elizabeth Anthony’s Will, Daughter Elizabeth Irvine is now married to Cowan & Daughter Sarah is dead. JOHN JR.’s WIFE: John Jr. married “Susan Austin” (1749 VA—1817 VA). They married in 1771 VA.
They had 8 Children = 6 sons & 2 daughters who were raised at home on their land around the Otter River. __ ~SR. lived in Albemarle Co., Bedford Co., & Campbell Co., VA & purchased 1,012 acres in 1754 on both sides of the Otter River & 674 acres in 1759 @ the head of Blackwater/Ivy Creek. ~ SR. was a Justice-of-the-Peace of Albemarle Co., VA in 1745-1746. He died in 1760.
~ JR. inherited much of his dad's land on the Otter River (as his only son). ~ JR. purchased 1,300 acres in 1780 on the south branch of Otter Creek. ~ JR. was said to have built brick home on a hill that overlooked Anthony Creek Mill (a tributary of Goose Creek). The Anthony Family lived here in the late 1700s through the mid-1800s. This was home to John Anthony JR., their wife Susan, & their 8 Children. ~ JR. became a Baptist minister in 1776. He established a church he named the Otter Church. (Later, it became the Bethlehem Church of Bedford Co., VA.) JR. served the church until his death in 1822. 3 of the 6 sons of JR.: Capt. Mark Anthony, Charles Anthony, & Abner Anthony established ferry stations (also called ford lines) on Anthony Mill Creek (today is known as Mill Creek) in Bedford Co., VA; on the Otter River in Campbell Co., VA; on Roanoke River in Pittsylvania Co., VA; & on the Roanoke River in Franklin Co., VA. There was also an Anthony's Bridge which was destroyed a few decades ago so "progress" could take place. ~ Capt. Mark Anthony had a grist mill & sawmill beside the ferry station @ Anthony Mill Creek where he lived & raised his 13 children.
~ Charles Anthony built a home he called "Walnut Hill" in Campbell Co., VA (near Evington) in the early 1800s. It was in a grove of black walnut trees. It stands today with his descendants still living there.
~ Abner Anthony had started a town called Monroe in 1818; it had many streets on a plat plan; it disappeared from the tax rolls in 1869. Monroe was on the banks of the Staunton River; the post office was called Monroeton. Today, Monroe would have been on the southern shoreline of Smith Mountain Lake; but it was submerged by the lake. ~ Abner Anthony became a Baptist minister (like his dad) & served in Bedford Co., Franklin Co., & Pittsylvania Co., VA.
~ Much of the Anthony Family holdings are now submerged by the formation of Smith Mountain Lake & Leesville Lake. ------------------------------- ~ Another "Walnut Hill" exists near Evington, VA. SR.'s Brother, Joseph Anthony, sold some land in 1782 to John Clark (kin of Joseph’s wife). Twenty years later, Clark sold the land to Samuel Moorman in 1802; a Goggins also sold the land to Moorman in 1802. Moorman called the house he built on this land, Walnut Hill. Moorman sold his home to his son-in-law, Col. Joel Leftwich, in 1883. “Their Walnut Hill” is now a historic home that is owned by the Leftwich Family & still stands today
~ Regarding the story of JR.'s son, William 'Banks' Anthony: In the Library of VA @ Richmond, there is an enormous collection of letters, deeds, documents, etc. from the youngest son of John Anthony JR. = Charles Anthony (1793-1884) & his daughter (Callie J. Brandon 1839-1886) & his granddaughter’ (Charles Anthony 1883-1966). One of the accounts is that Charles saw his older brother, Banks Anthony, riding up to the homeplace one evening in 1815. He then saw the approaching Banks & his horse disappear. Days later, the family learned that William Banks Anthony had been killed @ The Battle of New Orleans (during The War of 1812) on the very day that Charles saw Banks’ ghost riding his horse up to the homeplace. As late as 1960, Charles’ granddaughter (who was named Charles Anthony) told a reporter the story of her grandpa seeing his brother Banks’ ghost riding up to the homeplace on the same day that Banks died in battle. SON = Capt. Mark Anthony, Sr. was in command of 500 men from Bedford Co., VA. This was the VA Militia 10th Regiment. This company under Mark’s command was called “Anthony’s Artillery Company”. For 6 months, this artillery company was @ Ft. Norfolk, VA under the general command of Lt. Col. Edmund Lucas of the 4th Infantry Militia Regiment.
SON = William ‘Banks’ Anthony (1775 VA—1815 LA), was killed during The Battle of New Orleans. JOHN JR. & SUSAN’s 8 CHILDREN:

~ James Crenshaw Anthony (1785 VA) m: Mary S. Lee.
~ Abner Anthony (1790 VA--1884 VA) m: Elizabeth Early m: Amlira Arthur.
~ Charles Anthony (1793 VA—1884 VA) m: Martha Davis Haden. It was stated in papers from the library of the State of VA that JOHN ANTHONY, JR. & his wife were buried @ the family cemetery of their youngest son, Charles Anthony, @ his home called Walnut Hill in Campbell Co., VA.
