About John Ball Bailey
Musician, leader of the Band of H.M. 70th Regiment.
70th (Surrey) Regiment - The Taranaki war had escalated throughout 1860 and the 70th Regiment was ordered to New Zealand, arriving on three ships in May 1861, transferring from Calcutta, India. They were first stationed at Otahuhu in Auckland, as well as having detachments distributed down the country, including in Dunedin (1861-63).
On Tuesday (says the Gore Southern Standard) an old resident of the district in the person of Mr J. B. Bailey died at his residence in East Gore. Deceased first came to the colony attached to the regimental band of the 60th Regiment, which took part in one or more of the frequent Maori uprisings of the sixties. About 10 years ago the late Mr Bailey was bandmaster of the Gore Bras 3 Band, and as the occupant of that position was well known to the general public. He has been in indifferent health of late years. A family of several grown-up sons and a widow survive him. Source: Otago Witness (5 August 1903, p. 29).
