Excerpt from Inez Frame Patterson History:

The surname Baird is originally from the south of France, but the first mention of the name in Britain came with William the Conqueror. There is reason to believe some with the Baird name came to Scotland in 1174 when King William the Lion returned from his captivity in England. Early spellings are Bard, Barde, Byrd, Beard, etc. The Baird coat of arms is a "Boar Passant" to signify that the founder was a hunter, and the motto is "Dominous Fecit" - God has made. There is a Baird tartan.

It is believed that John Bard had four sons, John Jr, James, Robert, and William and two daughters.
