About John Bird, Goldsmith of London
John Bird, b: 1620, Middlesex, London, England, also died there in 1677. He never immigrated to the Virginia Colony. His surname was Bird not Byrd. He never changed his surname from Bird to Byrd. He was a goldsmith, having apprenticed with John Trevillian. John was socially considered, at best, middle class. He died 1677. His wife, Grace (Stegge), died in 1688 in London.
John married Grace Stegge, and to this union at least 2 children were born: William and Thomas, who both immigrated to VA. William Evelyn Bird was the elder son, and as a commitment for his coming to Virginia was bequeathed much property in a 31 Mar 1669 will by his uncle, Thomas Stegge (Jr.). After immigrating to Virginia, he changed his surname to Byrd. He became quite properous in Indian trading, political positions and later tobacco plantations. Thomas, not having inherited any land in Virginia, remained in England until after the December, 1690, death of his first wife and child. He then immigrated to what is now Henrico Co., VA and married a second time. His second wife, died shortly after him in 1710.
JOHN BIRD was a son of THOMAS BIRD, b: 1599; d: 1623. That Thomas, was the last direct male ancestor to be born at Broxton, Cheshire, England. Thomas became a vintner after a 1608-1616 apprenticeship under Henry Sacheverell. Thomas Bird married his cousin Elizabeth Byrd 18 Sep 1617 in London, England, at St. Andrews by the Wardrobe

John was a London goldsmith, apprenticeship with John Trevillian. William was the elder son and having inherited much property from his Uncle Thomas Stegge, became quite properous in Indian trading and later tobacco plantations. He became known as William I of Westover, owning a great plantation at Richmond. William married Maria or Mary Horsmanden, and son and grandson William II and III followed prior to Thomas Taylor Byrd, who was the ancestor of Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd and Senators Harry Flood Byrd and Harry Flood Byrd, Jr. Thomas, not having inherited any land in Virginia remained in England until after the death of his first wife and child in 1691-92, then coming to Virginia he married a second time after 1693 and lived in Henrico Co., VA. John Byrd, was the second son of Thomas Byrd of London and Elizabeth Byrd, a cousin, was his wife. John Burde. or Bird, goldsmith, 1668 is recorded as having been a maker of maser bowls, St. Giles, Cripplegate, had an interesting example inscribed with his name as the maker.
