About John Brings-the-Arrow
John was Lakota (Sioux), Cheyenne River tribe, Minnicoujou band (Cherry Creek Station)
Biography:
Born c. 1864 of parents unknown. Married Lucy First Woman date unknown. With her, the father of Samuel Brings-the-Arrow, Eagle Woman "Annie" Brings-the-Arrow, Julia Brings-the-Arrow, Joshua Brings-the-Arrow, Matthew Brings-the-Arrow, and Louis Bring-the-Arrow. They lived on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota, home to the four bands (Tiospaye) of the “Titunwan” People of the Plains: The “Mnicoujou” Planters By The Water, “Oohenumpa” Two Kettle, “Itazipco” Without Bows, and “Siha Sapa” Black Foot.

Cheyenne River Reservation c. 1909
John was admitted to the Canton Asylum for Insane Indians on October 21, 1903, and diagnosed with chronic melancholia, intoxication psychosis, and alcoholism.
John died at the Canton Asylum on January 23, 1915, but was NOT buried in the Hiawatha Asylum cemetery, his location of burial is unknown. (I've counted over 40 churches on the Cheyenne River Reservation, presumably, each has its cemetery, and I have not found an indication of John's burial.)
-His profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.
Research Notes:
-the 1910 census provides ages as follows: John 46 (1864), Lucy 46 (1864), Samuel 23 (1887), Mathews 9 (1901), Julia 16 (1894), Joshua 11 (1899), Louis 6 (1904)
-based on the 1910 census in which Lucy First Woman Brings-the-Arrow was head of household in Cherry Creek (Station), it is assumed that this was a semi-permanent residence, and John was, therefore, a member of the Minnicoujou band, probably in Cherry Creek which is believed to be the oldest permanent community in South Dakota.
-Selected photos from a collection containing 93 photographs shot by amateur photographer Bird Carson (1842-1925) depicting daily life on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, circa 1890-1920. Bird worked as a housekeeper for the local school and her husband John Franklin Carson worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a teacher at Cherry Creek Day School on the Reservation.
