Buried at Windham Cemetery, Rt. 203, Windham, CT. The old tombstones of the earliest settlers are grouped together near the cemetery entrance, having been moved from their original burial site.
John Broughton, the second child and first son of John and Hannah Bascom Broughton, was born in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT in 1654. He moved with his family to Northampton, MA in late 1654 or 1655.
John Broughton was a soldier in King Philip's War serving under Lieut. Jacob at the garrison of Marlborough, MA in Nov. 1675. Military service was credited on 20 and 30 Nov. 1675 with the Medfield and Mendon garrisons. He was also on Capt. William Turner's lists of service credited 29 Feb. 1675-6 and 24 June 1676.
On 29 Oct. 1678, John Broughton married wife one, Elizabeth Woodruff, daughter of the first Matthew Woodruff and his wife, Hannah Lambert. Matthew Woodruff was born in England and settled early in Hartford Co., CT. He moved to Farmington, CT in 1640-41 and died there in 1682. Elizabeth Woodruff was born at Farmington, CT ca Nov. 1651. She had brothers, John, Matthew and Samuel and sisters, Hannah and Mary Woodruff. At her father's death in 1682, Elizabeth Broughton's name was added by the court to the list of names of heirs to his estate. By this time, she was married and living in Northampton, MA. Trumbull's History of Northampton places Elizabeth Woodruff Broughton's death in Deerfield, MA. where John Broughton was a Proprietor from 1684 to 1691. He returned to Northampton in 1691.
In A History of Deerfield by Sheldon, John Broughton was shown as a land owner in Deerfield, MA. At a meeting 6 Jan. 1684-5, a committee was ordered to measure each man's allotments at Deerfield. John owned a lot in the "Elbow at New forte" (New Fort). At a Town Meeting held 5 Feb. 1686-7, inhabitants were to plan for the measurement of the common fence and assign each proprietor his due share. Included was a list of names of all who owned land in the Common Field. John Broughton's share was seven rods-gates and highway.
Partially due to the frequent Indian raids on the Connecticut River Valley, John Broughton and several other families from the Deerfield area moved to Windham Co., CT. The first settlement, made in April 1694, was "at or about the Crotch of the River", a curve in the Nauchauge near its junction with the Willimantic River, also known as the Horse-shoe. John Broughton settled in this vicinity. This new settlement was also called "The Centre" from its position among the older settlements. Windham was annexed to Hartford Co., CT in 1694. From correspondence with Alfred Fredette, a local historian from Scotland, CT, it was learned that John Broughton was admitted as an inhabitant of Windham at a Town Meeting held 4 Nov. 1695. Windham had, by then, established a rule which stated that inhabitants would be admitted into the community only after they had proven themselves wholesome and worthy of admittance. Those who were not considered worthy had to sell their property at a fair price and move on. The probationary period was usually three months, so it is fair to assume that John Broughton actually arrived in late Aug. or early Sept., 1695.
The completion of the meeting house in 1702 was soon followed by a division of the township. At a session of the Court held on 14 May 1702, the township of Windham was divided into two townships with each consisting of 41 square miles. The north part would be known as Mansfield Township (formerly called Pond Town) and the southern tract of land would be called Windham Township. John Broughton's land was located in the southern or Windham section. At a town meeting held 4 Dec. 1702, John Broughton was chosen as one of two surveyors of the highways. He had also served in this same capacity in 1701.
The records of the Congregational Church in Windham, CT from 1700-1851 included members of the church. Rev. Thomas Clap, Windham's second minister, ordained 3 Aug. 1726, listed all the members of the church. Included were John Broughton, Hannah Broughton (wife of John Sr.), John Broughton, Jr. (son of John Sr.) and Tabatha Broughton (wife of John Broughton, Jr.).
Thomas Broughton (son of John Jr.) became a new member 9 Feb. 1735.
John Broughton died 5 Jan. 1731 aged 77 years. His will was written 2 Aug. 1728.
