Biography
John Buxton was born about 1644 in Salem, Massachusetts.[2] His father was Anthony Buxton b: 1601 in Wookey, Somerset, England d: MAY 1684 in Salem, Essex, MA and mother was Elizabeth N. _____ b: 1623 in England d: 1713 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA. He married twice: 1st to Mary Small then 2nd to Elizabeth Holton. He lived on his father's farm on the Ipswich river in that part of Salem which was known as Salem Village and later became the town of Danvers.
In 1683 he entered a serious Salem Village controversy by going on the bond of Rev. George Burroughs who was suffering what seems to have been a most unjust persecution on the part of a church faction which did not end until the minister was hanged in 1692. Buxton believed in the existence of witchcraft, as did most of his contemporaries, and was one of the accusers of Sarah Wildes on April 21, 1692, but before the year was out he himself was among the victims of the delusion which ended, however, before he was brought to trial.
John Buxton was willed a 30 acre farm on the Ipswich River, beyond Salem Village, by his father, Anthony Buxton in 1684. He became Constable In 1680 and carried a 6 ft long, brass tipped staff of office. In 1683 he was in a serious Salem Village controversy by going on the bond of the Rev. George Burroughs, who was suffering unjust persecution by one of the Church's factions. The Minister was hanged in 1692. In 1692, with others, he complained of William Hobs and wife Deborah, Mary Esty, Sarah Wild, and others, charging them with sundry acts of witchcraft. They were tried, convicted and sent to prison. By 1700 John Buxton has acquired 280 acres of land. [4]
