About John Cecil
John Cecil, husband of Elizabeth Sollars, was not John Baptiste Cecil, and not the son of William Cecil of St. Mary's County, MD with wife Mary. He was the son of William Cecil and unknown mother. He was given to Mareen the Elder Duvall along with his ONLY siblings, Philip and Susanna. This being the deathbed wish of his mother. Hope that the managers of this profile will make the necessary changes. Unfortunately, the profile for his father and siblings are also at this stage wrong, but every attempt is being made to repair. Thanks!
He signed a will on 4 Jul 1757. Land I now live upon to his son, Zephaniah Cicell after his wife, Elizabeth's marriage or death. Will Probate: 28 Jan 1759, Prince George's Co, MD.

The Davis connection is interesting--if you have read my data on Wm Cecil in the Witten/Cecil page, I speculate about a "James Davis" who may be the same James Davis involved in the estate of Sabrett in 1852. One James Davis appeared before the council of Philadelphia claiming rights on behalf of William Cecill, the "First Purchaser" who held land in Pennsylvania as late as 1685 (maybe later?). A connection between these two would suggest a link to this Pennsylvania family. May be impossible to prove as James Davis is probably a common name.... Penny
Sabrett's Plantation covered much of what is today Takoma Park, Maryland and Sligo Creek Park. Some genealogies show him as the son of Thomas CECIL (d.1662), an engraver of London who came to MD to make maps, and was paid in land. He later returned to England where he died. Supposedly, this Thomas was the son of Thomas CECIL (1544-1622), Lord Burghley, m.1564 Dorothy, dau John NEVILLE. This line is unproven, and the current consensus of Cecil researchers is that John was the son of William, q.v.
Also, John is seen as a descendent of Henry CECIL (c.1577), grandson of Lord Burleigh (the Great Cecil). Brown, Gordon Thomas. Proved bythe oath of John Brown Brassier on 28, July 1758 in P.G. Co. It has been assumed (and debated!) by over 200 years of genealogiststhat William's sons John and Phillip, given to the Duvalls in 1697/8,are the same men who appear in later PGC records. In the case of JohnCecil of PGC, this is supported by several pieces of evidence: John Cecil, a landowner in Prince George's County, married ElizabethSollars in Queen Ann's Parish, PGC in 1718. Elizabeth's mother waspresumably one Ann Sabrett Sullivan Sollars. John and Elizabeth's children were probably Zephaniah, Samuel W.,Sabrett and Thomas. (references for this not cited here). They may have hadsons William and James. Samuel Cecil was William's administrator, assisted by John (possibly William's son and Samuel's father?), Sabrett and Thomas. Samuel W.Cecil was wed to Rebecca White, who was christened in Queen Ann'sparish by Rev. Jacob Henderson, who wed the widow of Mareen Duvall theImmigrant, Mary Duvall Ridgely. It is assumed that Mareen's son,Mareen the Elder, was the one to whom William Cecil bound hischildren. Obviously there was close association of all these people. It ispossible that the William who died in 1749 was not John Cecil's fatherbut another relative, such as an unknown son of William the widower of1697/8...but this is speculation. Most genealogists accept that thisWilliam was John's father and Samuel's grandfather. Phillip Cecil was also a landowner in PGC. He wed Elizabeth ??(probably Gittings) around 1715, and died in March of 1733. Accordingto the accounting of his estate, he left children Susannah, Mary,Elizabeth, John, William, Joshua and Phillip Jr. Phillip was probablythe son of William Cecil and the younger brother of John Cecil. However, his widow Elizabeth stated in court that her dead husband had "...no relation to yedeceased in this Province," an assertion which has troubledgenealogists for years. If this was actually Elizabeth Gittings Cecil, she was the daughter ofPhillip Gittings and Ann Sprigg, gentry of the area. Some genealogistshave speculated that since she was the daughter of a gentleman, shemight have been embarrassed by her husband's lowly relatives. However,John Cecil's wife Elizabeth Sollars was the daughter and sister ofgentlemen, and John died with a respectable amount of property.William Cecil's estate of about 113 pounds puts him in the middleclass of his time. Phillip Cecil's estate left nothing but debts andproperty which he had purchased from his brother in law. Thisspeculation does not hold up. However, other lines of evidence do converge to allow the assumptionthat Phillip and John Cecil were brothers. John's son Samuel andPhillip's daughter Elizabeth Cecil Whitten traveled in the same groupto Western Virginia about 1767. The names of the Perre, Dent, Sprigg,Beall, Duvall and Pile families appear with those of Phillip and JohnCecil too often for mere coincidence. Benjamin was the son of Samuel Cecil and Rebecca White. They had migrated from Frederick Co MD/formerly Prince Georges Co MD in 1760. Samuel Cecil was the son of John Cecil and Elizabeth Sollers of Prince Georges County MD. John and Elizabeth were married in the the old St Barnabas Anglican Church, Queen Ann's Parish, a log church built on the site of the present church. John Cecil, brother Phillip Cecil and sister Susan Cecil were children of Wiliam Sesell and unknwn who had been in the Province most of his life. William's parents have never been identified and the associations claimed over the years with Sir Thomas Cecil of William Lord Burleigh Cecil's family remain in the realm of speculation. Samuel Cecil was the executor of his grandfather William Sesell's estate. When just children John, Philip and Susan Cecil on their mother's deathbed and at her request were sent into the foster care of Mareen Duvall the Elder suggesting the speculation that their mother may have been a kinswoman of Mareen. Susan dissappears from history but John and Phillip leave a large posterity. The family is sometimes confused with the Cissels of Calvert County who were Catholics. Phillip Cecil's daughter Elizabeth, when her father died, apparently went to live with her uncle John Cecil's family and there she grew up. Later she married Thomas Witten Sr and migrated with her cousin Samuel and Rebecca to southern VA. Samuel and Rebecca settled at the site of Dublin in Montgomery/Pulaski Co VA and the Wittens moved on to Tazewell VA. There were five second cousin marriages between these two families. The Cecils and Witten both may have been in Barbadoes before coming to the Maryland Colony, a somewhat common occurrence. Benjamin Sollers Cecil and Priscilla Boyleston Cecil moved after the Revolution to southern Wayne County KY. Thir daughter Rebecca married Ezekiel Newport and made their home in the area that would become Scott Co TN. Their son Samuel Cecil m Katy Pevehouse dau of Abraham Pevehouse and Rebecca York of Fentress County TN and had one son James Timothy Cecil. Katy died and Samuel married Jane Chrisman and had a large family. James Timothy Cecil married Pharaba Reed dau of Isaac Reed and Pharaba Hatfield and they raised 17 children on their farm at the junction of the Old Monticello and Huntsville rds in Scott County TN. This is about a mile or so west of Huntsville and 1/2 mile east of the junction with US 27. I descend from two of James and Pharaba's sons, Riley Cecil m Artema Sexton and William "Squire Bill" Cecil m Nancy Williams West of Scott County TN. Mareen Duvall the younger, son of the immigrant Marin Duval, a Frenchman who won the favor of Lord Baltimore in the late 1600s. Upon completion of an indenture which merited him quite a few acres of land in Ann Arundel County, Mr. Duval became a very wealthy man and one of the established gentry of the early colony.
