About John Elmes
Evidence needed for origins before this profile. Detached as son of William Elmes, of Lilford
The HELM family was settled chiefly in the county of Lancaster, England, and also in Worcester and London. The earliest record of the Lancashire family was John Helme, who was priest of the Goosnargh Church in 1478. Other early Helms include Nicholas Helme, vicar of Kirkham in 1594, James Helme of Chipping in 1622. The first Helm in America is believed to have been Christopher Helme, who came from England to America about 1639 and settled first at Exeter, then moved to Warwick, Rhode Island. There was an Israel Helm residing in Delaware as early as 1649. According to some historians, he was of Swedish ancestry. He later moved to Bucks County, PA. Several other branches of early Helms settlers existed, but none connect directly to Helms families in NC. Helms family in NC might have come from Chester Co., PA, later located by boundry change in Delaware. The settlers of Welsh Tract PA came from Wales and were of Welch descent. Or they could be descendants of Israel Helm of Gloucester Co., West New Jersey who was born in Sweden (perhaps sons of John, who was son of Israel Helm Jr. John might have married a Tilghman girl) (manuscript of Sara Myers).
