About John Fauntleroy, of Fauntleroy Marsh

http://www.tmason1.com/pafc624.htm [from Fauntleroy Family, The, Microfilm] 1952

91 pages : illustrations, coats of arms, portraits [by Robert H. Fauntleroy] https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE934360 Fauntleroy! s Marsh The original home of the family, as far as we know, was near the town of Sherborne, in Dorsetshire. It was called "Fauntleroy's Marsh".
When it was built we do not know, but It dates back at least as far as the fourteenth century. The house here Is described by Coker in his "Survey of Dorsetshire", published in 1732, as being "a large, low, grotesque building, entirely of stone, and one of the most ancient houses in the county, called Fauntleroy's Marsh", at Alveston, one mile N.E. of Folke, on the east side of the parish ad- joining Candel Marsh. This old. stone building is still standing, as evidenced by the photographs of it in this book, taken in 1951. Fauntleroy's Marsh was originally a manor, and the early Fauntleroys held lt as vassals of the local bishop. It is now a farm, and is the property of Lord Digby, of Sherborne, who rents it out to tenants. Hutchln's History of Dorset, 1870, Vol. IV, pages 179-180 says, Quote: Fauntleroys Marsh, anciently a manor, now a farm, 1/2 mile N.E. of Folke. It formerly belonged to the Bishop of Sarum, who always continued lord paramount of it. Mr. Coker says:
"This place was named for the Fauntleroys, men of no mean antiquity, and if you understand the name, of equal descent,
who long since seated themselves in these parts by an heir of the Walleys, and whose ancient house is still owned by their offspring. Ibid. Vol. II, page 332. The Hundred of Sherborne from the most early ages belonged to the Bishops of Sherborne and Sarum. Peter Fauntleroy, bailiff of the hundred, accounts for £
15:4:0, perquisites of the court, in a court-roll of 17th year of Henry VIII, 1526. Fauntleroys Marsh passed out of the family in 1698, when John Fauntleroy willed It to George Cooper, who sold It to John Conyers, trustee for Thomas, Viscount Weymouth. The will was contested by members of the Fauntleroy family, but after years of litigation, the suit was abandoned.
"Much of the material in this book was taken from two books entitled "Col. Moore Fauntleroy, his Ancestors and Descendants", and "Early Fauntleroy Homes and Lands," by Juliet Fauntleroy.

  • The first known of the name of Fauntleroy was living in Dorset, England, in 1721. An undying tradition ascribes the paternity of the family to John, King of Frances, who was a captive at Windsor Castle, from 1356 to 1364, by a morganatic marriage with Catherine Grandeson, Countess of Salisbury, a member of the Courtenay family.
  • The first from whom an unbroken line was traced was John Fauntleroy, who married Joanna Whalley, of Purbick. Issue :

  • Tristram Fauntleroy
  • Tristram was born about 1470 in Mitchell's Marsh, Dorset, England. Tristram's father was 'John Fauntleroy' and his mother was Joan le Waleys. He had a sister named Agnes. He was the younger of the two children. He died about 1539. He was buried in Michel Marsh Church, Hants, England.
  • General Notes
  • He lived in Michelmarsh Manor House, and was educated at Oxford "Master of Chancery" (Doctor of Law).
  • Tristram's father was 'John Fauntleroy. His mother was either John's first wife, Joan le Waleys, or John's second wife, Elizabeth Wadham'.
  • Henry VII restored the Haudois estate on the Isle of Jersey to Tristram's father John Fauntleroy as heir and next of kin to Geoffrey Le Waleys who was killed in the battle of Barnet in 1471.
  • From Helen Sherman:
  • My cousin sent me a copy of "The Fauntleroy Family" by Robert H. Fauntleroy in which he states, "During the restoration of Michelmarsh Church about 1896, two stone slabs were discovered which came from the tomb of Tristram Fauntleroy,... One of them shows his Fauntelroy coat of arms impaling that of Holt. This clearly proves that Tristram married a Holt, and not Joan Stourton, as has been stated in some accounts of the family." He goes on to say that Joan Holt was the daughter of John Holt, widow of Thomas Villiers. Tristram Fauntleroy & Joan Holt had two sons, Bryan and John.
  • I don't know whether this clearly proves anything, and it would certainly be reasonable for Tristram to marry twice, and even have more offspring. No birth dates from either Bryan or John given either...
  • Incidentally, there is a wonderful picture of Tristram Fauntleroy from a stained glass window at Michelmarsh Church. When I told my brother that it was his 11th g.grandfather, he said, "I thought there was a family resemblance." !!! Oh, my!!
  • Helen
  • His will is dated 25 July 1539.
  • Tristram's first family
  • Tristram and Joan were married. They had two sons named Bryan and John.
