John Hamilton of Allanshaw, here treated, was the posthumous son of James Hamilton of Allanshaw and his wife Bessie Strang. He was their only child. He was born at Allanshaw on 3 March 1666, and his baptism was registered on 6 March 1666, at Hamilton in Lanarkshire, Scotland. His baptismal record reads as follows: "Umqll James Hamiltone in Allanshaw and Bessie Strang a son born the 3. n. John."
