1.JOHN JACOB RICHARDS

   John Jacob Richards was born John Jacob Reichart about 1715 in

Germany.

Jacob Richards was listed in an appraisement in Augusta County, VA,

Volume 3,Page 40, December 5,1754.

   Jacob and John Richards are listed in Volume 1,Page 87,Nov 19,1760

on a list of tithable of Harrison County VA.

Jacob was granted 400 acres by the Commissioners of Unpatented Lands to

include his settlement of 1771.

   Jacob and his relatives built Fort Richards on the west bank of the

West Fork River near the mouth of Sycamore Creek in present day Union

District of Harrison County, WV. Many pioneer families of the West Fork

Valley found refuge from the barbarian warfare in this fort. The site of

Richards' fort is marked by a spring which was inside of the palisade

the spring is now called Fort Spring. A Monument was erected in 1932 by

the County of Harrison to designate the Location of fort.

   Lands granted to Jacob and his relatives include: Arnold-300

acres-1773, Paul-400 acres-1773, Isaac-400 acres-Elk Creek, Jacob-400

acres-Sycamore Creek-1771, Henry-400 acres-Cheat River-1776, William-400

acres-Lost Creek, and Conrad Richards-in Lost Creek-1774. These were the

builders and defenders of this Richards fort.

   Jacob's spouse is unknown. He is reported to have married an Indian,

but this in doubtful, since Indians or part Indians were not allowed to

own land in the 1700 and early 1800's.
