JOHN JOHNSTONE OF THAT ILK

Children of James Johnstone of Johnstone (d. 1524) and Mary Maxwell:

1. John Johnstone of Johnstone (John Johnstone of that Ilk) was born in 1507.1 He was the son of James Johnstone of Johnstone and Mary Maxwell.1 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Jardine. He married, secondly, Nicola Douglas, daughter of Sir James Douglas, 7th of Drumlanrig and Margaret Douglas.1 He died on 8 November 1567.1

On 2 March 1542-43 he obtained a crown charter erecting his lands into the Barony of Johnstone, and entailing them upon himself and his sons James and Robert, and upon his brothers Adam, William, John, and Simon Johnstone, successively. He is frequently named as responsible for his clan to the government. Between 1542 and 1550 he had various charters of lands.1 He fought in the Battle of Pinkie on 10 September 1547.1 He was Commissioner to settle the border disputes in 1552.1 He lived at Johnstone, Scotland.

He was twice married, first to Elizabeth Jardine, who died in December 1544; secondly to Nicola Douglas, daughter of James Douglas of Drumlanrig. He also had children born out of wedlock.

Family

There is some disagreement between sources on which children belong to which wife. "TSP and BE1883 disagree on some of the attributions of John's children between his wives. We follow TSP." (TSP = The Scots Peerage, Vol. 1, pp. 245-247. "Johnstone, Marquess of Annandale.")
