John was born circa 1723 at Ireland.[3] He was the son of Col William McMachen and Elizabeth Blair?(Brooks?). John was the child of Col William McMachen when he immigrated before 1745 at Scotland from Scotland to Virginia.

He married Isabella Barnes circa 1747 at Virginia.[4]

In Col William McMachen's will, John was named by William to handle his estate on 24 February 1749 at Frederick County, Virginia.[5],[6] He received an inheritance from Col William McMachen on 3 October 1751 at Frederick County, Virginia, 1/3 of 1000 acres on Red Bud Creek.[7]

He bought property from William Purris on 21 November 1753 at Augusta County, Virginia, 427 acres on Borden's grant (Page 493).[8] John received a Land Grant on 19 October 1757 at Frederick County, Virginia, for 258 acres on Darby's Spring, Opeckon River from Honorable Thomas Lord Fairfax.[9] He received an inheritance from James Carter on 18 November 1758 at Frederick County, Virginia, 50 acres.[10] He sold property to Capt Henry Heath on 1 December 1760 at Frederick County, Virginia,, 300 acres on Red Bud Branch, Opechon (Book 6 - pg 183).[11] He sold property to John Urick Spahr on 3 May 1761 at Frederick County, Virginia,, 70 acres (part of inheritance).[12] He sold property to John Urick Spahr on 3 May 1761 at Frederick County, Virginia,, 248 acres on Darby's spring (Book 6 - pg. 224).[12] John received a Land Grant on 4 May 1762 at Frederick County, Virginia, for 195 acres on Opeckon River from Honorable Thomas Lord Fairfax.[13] He sold property to John Berry on 18 May 1762 at Augusta County, Virginia,, 427 acres Borden's grant (page 243).[14],[15] He sold property to Benjamin Logan on 4 September 1765 at Augusta County, Virginia,, 400 acres on north River of Shanandow (Page 244).[16] He sold property to Joseph Steer on 5 March 1767 at Frederick County, Virginia,, 195 acres on Opechon Creek (Book 11, pg 345).[17] He resided at Guilford County, North Carolina, in March 1773.

As an inhabitant of the County, he signed a petition to Josiah Martin Esquire, Governor of North Carolina.[18]

He sold property to an unknown person on 7 September 1774 at Frederick County, Virginia,, 50 acres sold at Tryon County, North Carolina (willed by James Carter).[10] He bought property from Rice Duncan on 10 April 1776 at Washington County, Tennessee,, 640 acres on the head of Knob Creek (page 48-49).[19]

John served in the military circa 1776 as a Lieutenant.[20]

He bought property from Charles Roberson on 20 August 1777 at Washington County, Tennessee,, 350 acres on Boons Creek & Indian Ridge (page 133-135).[21] He bought property from Charles Roberson on 22 February 1778 at Washington County, Tennessee, 340 acres between 2 forks of Knob Creek (page 52-53).[22]

John received a Land Grant on 23 October 1782 at Washington County, Tennessee, for 540 acres on Knob Creek (North Carolina grant 50(44). Transcription per Rae in Washington County, Tennessee Deeds, 1797-1817, Volume 2, October 23, 1782 John Blair received 540 acres on "Nobb" Creek (for 50 shillings per 100 acres), NC #44, page 179-180. Per Burgner North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee 1778-1791, this is called grant #50 on the top of Indian Ridge on Knob Creek (two different numbering systems) and is issued to John McMahan.

Per Burgner, on February 7, 1789 the last remaining part of John McMacken's 540 acre grant was sold to John Blair McMacken (his son)..23 John received a Land Grant on 13 October 1783 at Washington County, Tennessee, for 300 acres (grant 378).[24] John received a Land Grant on 13 October 1783 at Washington County, Tennessee, for 150 acres (grant 434).[25] He sold property to John Blair (Brooks?) McMahon on 7 February 1789 at Washington County, Tennessee, 267 acres on Knob Creek (page 79-81).[26]

John died in 1789 at Knob Creek, Washington County, Tennessee, on his farm.[4],[20],[27]

Will: 24 Feb 1749 Frederick County, Virginia, proved 6 Jun 1749, recorded in Will Book 1, page 293-295 and reads as follows: In the name of God Amen. I William McMechan of the Parish of Frederick in the County of Frederick & Colony of Virginia being sick & weak of Body but of sound and perfect memory and mind.....

I give and bequeath to my sons John, Richard and William McMehan (sic) all the Land by me now possessed to be among them divided and that my son John endeavor to take up the surplus land lying contiguous to the said Land, by getting the south line of my Land straightened to take in the said surplus land & if his Lordship do so grant & order by this my last will etc that said surplus Land being made into one Tract to be divided as mentioned hereafter viz. To my son John McMechan two hundred acres of the Land by me now possessed where my son John now possesseth & his part of the surplus land if obtained of his Lordship.

Item: That my two undernamed Executors sell or cause to be sold that tract or parcel of Land to me belonging Lying & being in Augusta County and the money arising by such sale go towards Defraying such Debts as may be brought against me. Item I likewise appoint constitute & Ordain my two well beloved friends, Lewis Neill & Gabriel Jones, with my son John McMechan, Executors, of this my last will & Testament.

In witness whereof I leave hereunto Set my hand & seal this 24th day of February 1749.
