Disputed Parents
G. Andrews Moriarty in "John Sayles of Providence." TAG 15:228 made this claim: "Turning now to the Providence records, we find that John Sayles was not the only person of the name early in Providence records [1645] (Prov. Rec., Vol. II p. 30). In view of the age of John, husband of Mary Williams, they cannot be the same person. I would suggest that this last is an older man. On 1 Oct 1663 Richard Sayles witnessed a deed of John Sayles (ie. husband of Mary Williams), and in 1688 Richard Sayles, as well as John, son of John and Mary, was taxed at Providence (Providence printed records, I, 6, and XVII, 127, 128)."He then suggested that John Sayles of 1645 was the father of John Sayles (Mary Williams' husband) and of Richard Sayles, and gives a description of John Sales of Charlestown whose daughter was Phebe. [1]
What Moriarty and subsequent writers missed was that John Sales, of Charlestown, whose daughter was Phebe, had removed to New Amsterdam. His daughter Phebe married there in 1640 and he made his will and died in 1645. [2]
An article in the NEHGR titled The Family of Phillip (Sole) Sayles of the Winthrop Fleet states that John Sales of Rhode Island has often been confused in many sources (including Sayles Country by Judith Hurst) with John Sales of the Winthrop Fleet who, with his daughter Phebe, relocated to New Amsterdam where he became known as Jan Celes and died in 1645; and thus cannot be the same as John Sales of Rhode Island.[3]
Parents removed: John Sales and Phillipa Sole/Soales
Were Richard Sayles and John Sayles perhaps brothers?

Additional submitted biography: "JOHN SAYLES, son of John Sayles, of Manchester, England, was brought to this country, by his father, in 1635, at the age of two years, and, after living for a time at Portsmouth, RI, he came to Providence, where, about 1650, he married Mary Williams, daughter of Roger and Mary Williams, of Providence." (Source unknown). This explanation seems unlikely as it is not supported by White, Dorothy Hinson. (2002). Descendants of Roger Williams, Book III: The Sayles Line Through His Daughter Mary Williams. Roger Williams Family Association, East Greenwich, RI. White (2002) records that his two older sisters, Phoebe and Sarah, were born in Little Waldingfield Parish, Suffolk County, England but that he and his younger brother, Richard, were probably born at Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony (p. 2).
In 1653 he was treasurer of the Assembly which met at Providence, May 16. In 1656 he 'entered an anker of liquor.' The same year he assisted Thomas Angell in rescuing a prisoner from the custody of a Massachusetts officer. In 1657 he was empowered 'to treat with the Indians that lay claim to the meadows of Lohusqussuck, and clear it for the town and the above mentioned be accommodated therein.'
