About John Schaw of Alva and Knockhill

John Schaw of Alva, who, with his father, had an appointment from the King for the custody of Stirling Castle on 20 January, 1489. He held the office of Sheriff of Clackmannan which he resigned in favour of Sir William Menteith of Kerse who had a charter of confirmation on 25 September, 1489.

Andrew Schaw of Knockhill, the father of Margaret Schaw or Younger, was grandson of John Schaw of Alva and Knockhill, second son of Sir James Schaw of Sauchie (alive 1483), who was grandson of Sir James Schaw of Greenock, who married Mary, second daughter and co-heiress of Islay de Annand of Sauchie, who was the lineal descendant of Islay de Annand (alive 1296). His wife, Janet Forrester, was the widow of John Schaw of Knockhill, son of Sir James Schaw of Sauchie.3 In 1499, Fossoquhy is let to John Murray of Fallowhill, and Janet, his spouse.4 In 1510, Fossoquhy is now set in feuferme to George Schaw for i?18, and 18s. for entry.5 Page n112
