Biography

Birth record from Charles N. Sinnett (comp.) THE HISTORY OF THE SCRIBNER FAMILIES IN AMERICA (Fertile, Minnesota; n. p., 1914), 18-19. The only known original of this typewritten document is in the Maine State Library, Augusta, Maine. Death information from PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, VOL. 2, 1718-1740, STATE PAPERS SERIES, VOL. 32, PART 1 (Bristol, N.H.; R.W. Musgrove, 1914); 556. He and his family moved from Dover to Exeter in 1689, after selling his Dover holdings inherited from his father. In 1698 he received 60 acres of land from the Town of Exeter. Also that year of 1698, he united with the newly -formed Congregational Church at Exeter. Then, in 1726, he received another 50 acres of land from the Town (Sinnett, SCRIBNER FAMILIES [note 5], 20-22. We learn the names of John and Elizabeth's children (at least, those who were living on Marc h 2, 1735/36) from John's will. In the will he speaks of sons Joh, Edward, Samual and Joseph (who he named as Executor, leading us to suspect that Joseph was the oldest), and daughters Elizabeth Moody, Mary Gadon (Gordon), Abigail Young, Susann a Mudget and Sara Moody. John and his son John Jr. are mentioned as part-purchasers of King's Falls Saw Mill in Exeter on 7 August 1723, along with Nathaniel Glidden, Henry Wadleigh, Daniel Ladd and others (N.H. Provincial Deeds, 14:179, quoted by G. W. Chamberlain in hi s book, THE DESCENDENTS OF CHARLES GLIDDEN OF PORTSMOUTH AND EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE [Boston: Published by the author, 1925]: 77).

Disputed Mother

Citation:

page 51 of Part 1 of the Parish Register for Wem, Shropshire County, England. The original entry reads : "1623, Oct. 27. John, s. of Thomas [Skeinen?], sawyer bap." The question about Thomas' last name is answered on page xvi. of Part 2 (one of the pages where corrections are noted), where it is stated: "Page 51, Line 18. For 'Skeinen,' read 'Skriven.'" In that Wem Register, the mothers' names are not listed, so we do not know the name of John's mother His mother was an unknown affair with whom Thomas had an affair.

Disputed Wife

Robert Charles Anderson in the Great Migration Series and more recent sources show no daughter named Mary Hilton of Edward Hilton.

However, George Norbury Mackenzie in 1914 wrote:

"It is claimed that his wife was Mary Hilton, dau. of Edward Hilton, one of the historic founders of New Hampshire, 1623, and that he came from Kent, England."

Citation:

George Norbury Mackenzie, Colonial Families of the United States of America, (1914) Volume IV: Scribner Family p 448 ("It is claimed that his wife was Mary Hilton, dau. of Edward Hilton, one of the historic founders of New Hampshire, 1623, and that he came from Kent, England.") link

Mackenzie cites no sources and was probably mistaken. All we know about his wife is that her name was Mary.

John Scriven born 1623 may have been the illegitimate son of Thomas Scriven. He married Mary and although some say her maiden name was Hilton this has not been proven. John Scriven had 4 children: John, Thomas B, Elizabeth and Edward. Edward was killed while in service to the King in England. John, Thomas B and Elizabeth were the ones that changed their name to Scribner
