Biography

John Soule was born at Plymouth, Plymouth Colony about 1632 to Mayflower passenger George Soule (1593-<1678) and Mary Beckett (1593-1679) and died at Duxbury before November 14, 1707. In a deposition date March 8, 1705/6, John Soule swore he was "about Seventy foure years" of age. He is buried at Myles Standish Burying Ground, Duxbury, Massachusetts, United States. John Soule died intestate and Esther Soul, widow, was appointed to administer his estate 14 November 1707.

John 1st married about 1654 to Rebecca Simmons, daughter of Moses Simmons and Sarah, they likely married in Duxbury where she also probably died between 1665 and 1668. He 2nd marred in Duxbury after 3 July 1678 to Esther Samson, widow of Samuel Sampson. Hester was probably the daughter of Philip Delano[4] (or De la Noye) and Hester Dewsbury, her father being the John married second Esther (Delano) Samson, widow of Samuel Sampson, father being the French Protestant who joined the Pilgrims in Holland. No other person of her name was born in Duxbury, who could have been his wife.

Notes

  • The oldest records of Middleborough are in a pigskin covered volume which is not numbered, but is labelled "early Records." Some of the leaves of this book are in a very bad condition, and it should be preserved by the Emery process. The book contains the earliest Proprietors' Records, many records of Town Meetings, etc., and a few pages of vital records. On the inside of the front cover is written "John Soule bult his hous In yere 1700," "William Thomas Son was born in the yeare 1700." [Early Records, Part I, page 1]
  • John Soule died intestate and Esther Soul, widow, was appointed to administer his estate 14 November 1707. His three daughters or their heirs proposed division of the residuary real estate amongst them since their father "in his lifetime settled all his sons portions in land by deed", and they, the daughters, received but one cow. The settlement was signed by John and Rachel Cobb, Edmund and Rebecca Weston and Adam Wright on behalf of his children born to his wife, Sarah, deceased. G. E. Bowman (MD 8:184ff) identifies all the sons of John and abstracts the deeds of gift to these sons.
  • Re: “married 2nd probably in Duxbury about 1678 Esther (Nash) Sampson, daughter of Lt. Samuel Nash and an unknown woman, and the widow of Samuel Sampson.” Some sources list John's second wife as Esther (Nash) Sampson,[8][11] but the Mayflower Society considers this to be "quite unlikely".[2] See this page for more information: “Who Was the Wife of Samuel Sampson and John Soule?” < link >
  • The consensus conclusion is that Esther (or Hester), widow of 1) Samuel Sampson 2) John Soule, was most likely the daughter of Philippe Delano and Mary Pontus.
