John Thornbury

John Thornbury was born c.1715 in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford Co., Virginia. He was the son of Samuel Thornbury and wife Mary Wheeler. He married Elizabeth on December 14,1749 in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Virginia. She is believed to be the daughter of William Bolling. John and Elizabeth had eleven children. He died c.1799 in Fauquier Co., Virginia.

His will survives today. By reading his bequests, it is evident that he owned nearly 500 acres spread across several plantations. He was a slaveholder and left his slaves to his wife and children. Elizabeth had full use of the land until her death or remarriage and then he left instructions on how the estate was to pass on to his children.
