Biography

John, son of John Vickery & Hannah, was baptised on 16 February 1817 in Bristol, Gloucester, England.[1]

John married Mary Parish on 16 August 1840 in Horfield, Holy Trinity, Gloucestershire, England.[2]

On August 10th, at Hendley farm, Upper Riccarton, John Vickery died, in his seventy-eighth year.[3] [4]

Obituary.

Another old identity, in the person of Mr John Vickery, of Upper Riccarton, passed away on August 10. He was one of the oldest settlers, having arrived here in the Isabella Harens in the year 1850, under engagement to the late Mr John Shand, of Avon Lodge, Riccarton. Shortly afterwards he purchased some freehold property at Riccarton, and subsequently some land at Sockburn, where he was a successful farmer for many years, and resided until the time of his death. He was seventy-eight years of age, and had been a great sufferer for some considerable time previous to his demise. He never took any active part in politics, but was a churchwarden at Riccarton for a considerable period. Many farmers are indebted to the late Mr Vickery for useful advice on matters connected with farming in Canterbury. He leaves a widow and a large family to mourn his death. The deceased was buried at Riccarton on Sunday, when A great many of his friends attended the funeral to show the respect in which he was held.[5]

Research Notes

The obituary states Isabella Harens. The ship was actually called Isabella Hercus and was the sixth ship to arrive in Canterbury, in late 1850.

General Notes:

The first we learn of John Vickery was when he was living at The Common, Horfield in 1841 as an agriculture labourer with Mary, his wife and Hannah Vickery who we believe was his Mother. From there, we found that John was baptised on the 16 February 1817 at St James Parish Church in the City of Bristol. His Parents John Vickery (a labourer) and Hannah Brown were married on 10 March 1807 at St James Parish Church. His Father, John died in 1824 and was buried at Horfield.
John and Tilly and five children sailed into Lyttleton harbour on 01/03/1851 on the Isabella Hercus, sailed Plymouth England 24/10/1850.
John Vickery secured work with Mr John Shand for a time before taking up farming on his own account in what is now known as Sockburn. He had four parcels of land and his son James had another few acres in the same area. James sold his land before heading north with his young Family.

John was very involved in the church life of St Peters Anglican Church at Riccarton. It has been said that he dug the first grave in the new Church Yard.

A year after their arrival at Riccarton, their fourth son, Charles died and was buried in the Barbadoes Street Cemetery, Christchurch. There were to be ten children were born to the couple after their arrival in Christchurch, the first six were daughters followed by two sons and a daughter.

During the court proceedings brought by his daughter Grace, to overturn a document which gave his farm to Mary and his two youngst sons on the grounds the he was incapable understanding the document or its effect on his family, it is recorded that "Up to the year 1861 he had appeared tj be fairly well mentally, but he then went to the Gabriel's Gully rush, and on returning he showed signs of derangement. He became gradually worse, and in June, 1873, he was committed to the lunatic asylum, where he remained for five weeks. He was again sent there in February, 1880, and was finally discharged on Sept. 23 of the same year."

With the support of most of her siblings, Grace eventually won the right to administer her fathers estate and distribute the proceeds amoung them.
