John Vining was born in Wincanton, Somerset, England and came to Weymouth, Massachusetts on "Mr. Stratton's ship" in 1652 at the age of 16 and "amassed a fortune there". Married his first wife Margaret Reade 5/11/1657. She died 7/6/1659. He then married his second wife Mary Reed 1/22/1660.

John’s parents are usually given as Robert Vining and Mary, of Wincanton England, owner of the White Horse Inn. I have not seen any old references making this connection -- everyone seems to derive this fact from the 1980 Barnes book. Savage calls him simply John of Weymouth (Mass), and makes no connection to Wincanton England. There would be no problem here, except that the proprietorship of the White Horse Inn passed from Robert to John Vining. Our John came to America in 1652, but the White Horse Inn was still being operated by John Vining after this date, making the connection of our John as a son of Robert rather questionable {wa}. On the other hand, just because the inn was taken over by a John Vining does not necessarily imply that this John is the son of Robert either -- the inn could have been sold to a brother or nephew. Robert Vining’s son John was born in 1636. It is unlikely that he would have taken over the inn before age 16. The best supporting evidence I have found is a statement that John son of Robert Vining, baptised 17 Apr 1636 in Wincanton, is among several emigrants who went to New England about 1651 {f}. So until some other evidence to the contrary is found, we are assuming that the assignment of John as a child of Robert and Mary is correct.

John was married first in Weymouth, Suffolk (now Norfolk) County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on 11 May 1657 to Margaret Reed, the daughter of William Reed and Avis Chapman.[5]The Weymouth town records that refer to this marriage are based on the contemporary Suffolk County annual returns of vital records. Weymouth's town vital records aren't extant from the 1650s. The county record says "John Vineing and Marcye daughter of William Read were married by Capt. Torrey." Above "Marcey" in brackets, written later, is "Marget," surely referring to the death record that calls her that, and accords with William and Avis's daughter Margaret being baptized in 1636. The original compiler of the county returns may have misread what was sent to him from the Weymouth town clerk, or the mistake was when the county records were transcribed in 1856. The original manuscript of the county records, if they still exist, would help solve this mystery. She died on 6 July (not August) 1659.[6]

John married secondly in Weymouth on the 22 January 1659/60 to Mary Reed,[7] the daughter of Philip Reed.

John and his 2nd wife, Mary, had "ten or more children," according to Torrey.[8]
