About John Williams

Find A Grave Memorial John James Williams

On May 16, 2024, the BigY-700 test results came in from Family Tree DNA that proves without a doubt the father and the grandfather of John Williams.

Kit 1012131 (a Martin male) matched Kits 34645 and 994855 (both Williams males), meaning that all three share a common YDNA ancestor. That person is Rial Martin, born about 1765, likely in Colonial Virginia, who died about 1845 in Limestone County, Alabama. This R1a haplogroup subclade is R-FTA45618.

Rial Martin's father was William Martin, who was born about 1735 in Colonial Virginia. He died in 1809 in Surry County, North Carolina. Rial Martin is mentioned in his will.

William Martin descendant William D. Martin (Kit 1004273) tested for BigY-700, and has the subclade of R-FTB64834. William D. Martin descends via William Martin's only other known son Burrell Martin. And since R-FTB64834 is the "parent" subclade for R-FTA45618 and other descendant lines, we know that John Williams could not be the son of Burrell Martin.

The parents of William Martin who died in 1809 is unknown at this time. His direct descendant, Kit 1004273, shares a common ancestor with two more Martins (Kits 254443 and 236773) who was born about 1550, likely in England.

These critical YDNA tests prove the father and grandfather of John Williams, ending a decades-long quest to identify his genealogical history.

NOTE This note is not the case two different people!
He has two major genealogies. He is known as John Williams in one, and James Williams in the other. It's the same person with the same children and the same two wives. He is often referred to as John James Williams.

DNA
Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. Kenneth Williams, FTDNA kit #B532349, and his 4th cousin once removed, James Alan Williams, FTDNA kit #36162, match at a Genetic Distance of 3 on 37 markers thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA John Williams. FTDNA indicates that the probability the two share a common ancestor within the last 8 generations is 70.5% and within the last 12 generations is 90.23%.
BigY-700 data

In 2024, a direct descendant of Rial Martin tested for BigY-700 at FamilyTreeDNA. He is in the R1a haplogroup with a subclade of R-FTA45618 with two Williams men, proving along with substantial autosomal DNA evidence, that Rial Martin is the father of James Williams and John Williams.

John Williams - Where is the evidence?

I am a BigY-700 YDNA descendant of John "James" Williams. As of March 2024, we have zero evidence - YDNA or paper trail - to prove who his father is. Additionally, John Williams consistently told census-takers that he was born in Virginia, most likely in what is now Scott County (likely Washington County) when he was born.

We do know that at some point we descend from a Martin man, based on YDNA and aDNA matches.

Additionally, our family clade "parent" is R-YP658, born about 750 CE in the Rotterdam area of the Netherlands. We have two BigY-700 matches in the Netherlands to men named van der Horst (R-YP658) and Raap (R-FTB69987, dating to 1150 CE).

BigY-700 testing proves that John Williams has a subclade of R-FTA46021.

John's grandson, Alexander Williams, has a BigY-confirmed subclade of R-FTA97287. Alexander Williams is my great-grandfather, and I proudly carry the same identical markers as Alexander.

We currently are testing a direct descendant of William Martin, who died in 1809 in Surry County, North Carolina, in an attempt to prove that William Martin is the grandfather of John Williams.

I am an administrator of the R-YP658 Haplogroup Project at FamilyTreeDNA, and my research group is sharing our extensive research at WikiTree.
