John Yates of Lyford, born about 01 October 1611, christened 10 January 1612 in Lyford, Buckland Parish, Berkshire, England, by religion was Catholic. He was branded a popish recusant by the English government. A recusant is an individual forcibly converted to Protestantism who remains loyal to his Roman Catholic beliefs and continues to be a practicing Catholic, even refusing to attend the Protestant services of the Church of England. He and his family were much persecuted. John died before 7 August 1654 at Ufton Court, Berkshire, England and left no written will. Probably, his will was verbally expressed to those attending his death bed. His wife Mary (Elizabeth) Tattershall (Tattershell, Tattersall, Tattersail), whom he married about 1633 in Lyford, Buckland Parish, Berkshire, England, was also Catholic and held to be a recusant. Religious persecution may have influenced his son George Yeates/Yates to leave England and emigrate to the English colony of Maryland.
