=================================================

There was a Sir-Alexander de Chesney who occurs as witness to a Buckinghamshire deed23 of Ralph de Cheyndut (a family with whom the Cheyneys seem to have been.associated) in about 1240; in which year Alexander de-Chedneto presented John de Cheneto to the living of Isenhampstead (Berks. )24 He was probably dead before1259 when John, . son of Sir Alexander de Cheyne, granted to the Abbey of St. Albans five messuages in §t.Albans which Geoffery Nouwell and Benedicta his wife gave with Joan their daughter in marriage to John ‘de-Cheyne ancestor of the donor.25 This latter John was probably son of an earlier Alexander, as in 1199 ‘an assize was summoned to decide whether Alexander‘ father of John de Chesnei was seisedof 10 acres of woodin Suinesheued (Swineshead, Hunts.), which William.son of Ralf was holding.26 This I take to be theAlexander who, always in company with his brotherRalf,27 witnesses charters of Robert de Chesney,Bishop of Lincoln,28 VVilliam de Chesney29 of Oxfordthe bishop’s brother (by whom they are styledcognati mei), and Ralf Murdac,30 the bishop’s nephew,between 1165 and 1180.- In view of the fact thatBishop Robert was accused of bestowing the estates ofhis church too lavishly upon his relations it is worth noticing that land _ in the episcopal manor of Dean(Beds.) was held in 1216 by John de Cheyney, who seemsto have been succeeded before 1228 by Alexander.31I suggest, therefore, that the Alexander who broughtthe Cheyney name back into East Sussex was a' youngerson of Sir Alexander, but exactly where his line shouldjoin on to the main stem I cannot -say. The descen-dants of Alexander I propose to deal with in section(F), and will now turn to the consideration of the Cheyneys of Norfolk, descendants of Sybil, daughterof Ralf
