About Jollan de Neville
Jollan's parentage, and connection to the baronial Neville family, are uncertain. He is said to have been a son of Gilbert de Neville, who allegedly commanded the fleet of William the Conqueror; but there is no supporting evidence for this and good reason to suspect it was a later legend (or possibly confusion with an earlier Joscelin de Neville).
If he was Gilbert's son, and not grandson, he must have been the absolute baby of the family. Nor does this square with his living until 1208!
It has also been deduced (from "Early Yorkshire Charters") that rather than *being* a Neville, he *married* a Neville, and was actually the same person as Joscelin son of Roscelin. This is considerably more plausible. It has been suggested that his wife was the daughter of the later Gilbert de Neville (?-1169) who had three known sons, Geoffrey (or Geoffroy), William, and Walter. (Geoffroy, incidentally, had descendants only through his daughter Isabel, who married Robert FitzMaldred!) Further support for this theory is shown by the marriage contract of Jollan II de Neville and Amphelis de Rolleston, witnessed by a Geoffrey, William, and Walter de Neville (Jollan II's uncles?).
Note: Since he was not in the direct line no matter how you look at it, he has no right to the Raby rose on the Neville cross.
