About José de los Santos Moreno García
Santos Moreno acquired his 17,000 acre land grant La Trinidad in 1836 shortly after Texas declared its independence from Mexico. Due to his loyalty towards Texas, he was given complete title to his land in 1852 by the Bourland Act. It is considered a first headrights land grant by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. The Moreno family as a whole were loyal to Texas during the war. Santos may have approved of his daughter Zeferina's marriage to Antonio Leal due to the Canary Islanders loyalty to Texas. Originally, Santos Moreno also held a land grant in Starr county Texas that also crossed over the Rio Grande into tamaulipas Mexico and some of his children were born at this ranch. This grant was lost after the war with Mexico during negotiations with the United States. Reparations for the loss of this significant land holding has never been compensated by Mexico as was agreed despite the best efforts of the family. Santos Moreno's father and grandfather were also land grant holders as well as his in laws and some of their grants suffered similar fates. A branch of the Garcia family (per Concepcion Garcia, Santos' wife) still resides on a part of La Trinidad where the family cemetery is located. Santos and Concepcion were an arranged cousin marriage as was traditional in the family as her father and his mother were brother and sister. This tradition finally ended when their great, great, great, grandson Daniel Rios, Jr married Emilia Villarreal against the wishes of the family.
