About Joseph Baldwin

Benjamin Baldwin, II

BENJAMIN 3, Benjamin 2, Joseph 1

His wife was Rebecca Dodd. Some Internet genealogies have ascribed another wife to him (Susannah Kitchell), who was his brother Jonathan's wife. His children were: David, Aaron, Sarah, and Benjamin. His wife outlived him by 18 years.

Benjamin Baldwin, was the son of Benjamin Baldwin and Hannah Sargeant, was of Newark, New Jersey. Born c.1680. The late Samuel Congar of Newark, is the very leading authority on the early settlers of Newark. He states that Joseph, or his brother Benjamin, or Joseph and Benjamin had:

David (b. about 1715), Aaron, and Benjamin (c1730).

I find among the papers of Mr. Congar, which I have examined since his decease, that Rebecca, the widow of Joseph, d. June 17, 1748, aged 61. [Roberts Papers]. Mr. Congar states, in his book, that Aaron or Benjamin, in 1752 and 1753, sold lands inherited from Benjamin and Joseph, David agreeing. Dr. Dodd gives :

a daughter Sarah (who, by her descendants, is said to have been born April 20, 1720, and daughter of Benjamin. She m. her cousin Ezekiel4 John3 Jonathan2 Joseph1).

On the authority of the descendants who claim to be descended from three Benjamins in succession, I make this Benjamin instead of Joseph.
