Joseph Carpenter

Joseph was a Lakota Sioux man from the Cheyenne River Tribe, Cheyenne River Reservation, South Dakota

Home of four of the seven bands of the Titunwan (People of the Plains) of the Lakota/Dakota/Nakota Nation
1. Mnicoujou (Planters by the Water)
2. Siha Sapa (Black Foot)
3. Oohenumpa (Two Kettle)
4. Itazipco (Without Bows)
The communities of Iron Lightning, Thunder Butte, Bullhead, Little Eagle, and Wakpala date back to the original 1889 reservation boundaries. Nearly all communities on the Cheyenne River Reservation, including in the land area settled by white homesteaders after 1908, have a majority population of Native Americans. Most of the communities rank as the lowest income per-capita in the United States.

Biography:
Joseph Carpenter was born c. 1881 probably on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation to father Antoine Carpenter (Band #330 in 1891 census) and wife Mrs. Nora Carpenter his mother c. 1862. He had one sibling Edith. His mother remarried before 1895 to William Wounds the Enemy, c. 1864. That marriage produced five siblings, all half siblings of Joseph.

In her book Vanished in Hiawatha, Carla Joinson writes that Joseph was admitted to the Canton Asylum on November 7, 1914 and diagnosed with dementia praecox. (Dementia praecox is a term previously used to describe the condition now known as schizophrenia.)

When the Canton Asylum was closed, Joseph was transferred on December 22, 1933 to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington D.C. Joseph was not included in the 1940 St. Elizabeth’s Hospital census so had either been discharged or had died. The last Cheyenne River Agency census in which he is mentioned as being at St. Elizabeth’s is April 1, 1937. He is NOT included in the supplemental roll for 1937, 1938, 1941 and 1942 deaths to December 31. There does not seem to be a 1939 specific death roll supplement. He likely died sometime in 1939 before April 4, 1940.
