About Joseph Cope, Convict "Countess of Harcourt" 1828
Joseph was born in 1807, in Cheshire, England, United Kingdom. He was christened on 21 June 1807 at St Michael Macclesfield, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom. He was the son of Jeremiah Cope and Mary Fox.
At the age of 19 he worked as a Silk Weaver in Macclesfield, England, United Kingdom. Joseph was charged with burglary and convicted in the Chester Session of Pleas, England, United Kingdom in September 1827. The sentence was life, and he was transported to Australia on the convict ship Countess of Harcourt on 29 April 1828. The ship arrived in New South Wales on the 8 September 1828.
On arrival, Joseph Cope was assigned to William Cox junior at Hobartville, and in the 1828 Census he was listed as aged 20, a shepherd, assigned to William Cox at 'Segenhoe', a property in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. He worked for 9 years as a shepherd at Segenhoe which is still operating today. In 1913 it became a well known stud farm in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia.
At the time of the 1837 convict muster he was assigned to A. Cox, and that year, on 18 November, he was granted a Ticket of Leave for the district of Invermein.
On 5 December 1839 there was a request by Magistrate E.D. Day of the Muswellbrook Court of Petty Sessions, that the Ticket of Leave belonging to Cope be replaced as it had been rendered useless by being wet.[3]
On 7 September 1841, Rev. Anderson of Invermein applied to the Governor for permission to marry Joseph Cope, age 32 and Fanny Cockersole, age 19, who had arrived as convict on the Mary Anne in 1839. Permission was granted on 7 October 1841, and Rev. Anderson would have married them soon afterwards, however their marriage has not been found in the NSW Registry of marriages.[4] Fanny as she was known was also a convict. She was charged with Larceny back in England, and was transported on the "Mary Anne" to Australia in 1839.
From what is known the couple had one child. There is mention of another child named Jane Adams, however, there is no sufficient evidence of this via a reliable source. An actual birth/baptism record needs to be sourced, and verified, to add this child to this profile. Thus far, this has not been found. What has been found thus far is only information from wherever it has come from. In genealogy this is not a source as such. Please refer to Joseph Cope profile on Wikitree.com for details.
