About Joshua Raphael ben Israel Benveniste
Joshua Raphael (ca. 1590–1668), was educated at the Ibn Ya‘ish family’s seminary, which was headed by Rabbi Joseph ben Moses Miṭrani (known as Mahariṭ, 1569–1639) (see Ṭrani (Miṭrani), Joseph ben Moses di, the Elder. Joshua Raphael was a physician and poet who also served as rabbi (marbiṣ tora) for one of Istanbul’s congregations before moving to Bursa, where he remained for the rest of his life. He was a prolific writer. His books include, among other works, the responsa collection Sha‘ar Yehoshu‘a (Joshua’s Gate; Hosiatin, 1903; Jerusalem 1982-92), a collection of homilies entitled Ozney Yehoshu‘a (Joshua’s Ears; Istanbul, 1677), and a commentary on the Jerusalem Talmud, Sedeh Yehoshu‘a (Joshua’s Field; Istanbul, 1662).
