About Judith of Hungary

Judith of Hungary

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Judith of Hungary.

Judith of Hungary (Polish: Judyta węgierska; b. Esztergom, ca. 969 - d. Kraków?, ca. 988),[1] was a Hungarian princes member of the House of Arpad and by marriage member of the House of Piast, who ruled Poland at that time.

According to some sources,[2][3][4] she was the eldest child of Géza of Hungary by his first wife Sarolt, a daughter of Kangar Gyula of Transylvania.

However, modern historians discarted now her parentage, and stated that she was an unknown Hungarian princess.[5] Though opinions vary about the identity of Bolesław I 's second wife, there is a number of researchers who still support the hypothesis of her being the daughter of Géza.

[edit]Life

At the end of 985, Judith became in the second wife of Bolesław, heir of the Polish throne, after he repudiated his first wife Hunilda, daughter of Rikdag, Margrave of Meissen. The union (probably instigated by Duke Boleslav II of Bohemia, maternal uncle of the Polish prince) produced a son, Bezprym.

Perhaps because of the deterioration in political relations between Poland and Hungary, around 987 Judith was repudiated and sent away. She probably remained in Poland and died shortly after her divorce; she never become Duchess of Poland because her father-in-law was still alive at the time of her dismissal.

Bolesław soon re-married, this time with Emnilda, an Slavic princess, who bore him five children, including the future Mieszko II Lambert. Despite Bezprym was the first-born son, he was deprived of the throne of Poland by his father, who largely favored the children born from his union with Emnilda. Around 1003 Bolesław I sent Bezprym to Italy, where he became a monk in one of Saint Romuald's hermitages. In 1031, in alliance with Conrad II, Holy Roman Emperor and the Grand Prince Yaroslav I the Wise, he finally gained the throne to his half-brother Mieszko II. His reign didn't last long and was murdered one year later.

Judith was survived by her father, and when he died in 997, one of his distant cousins Koppány, who declared his claim to the leadership of the Magyars against Judith's brother, Vajk. Koppány wanted to marry Judith's stepmother, referring to the Hungarian tradition. Koppány, nevertheless, was defeated, and shortly afterwards Vajk was crowned as the first King of Hungary as Stephen

Árpád-házi Judit (975 körül – 1030 körül) 975 körül született Géza fejedelem és Sarolt elsőszülött gyermekeként. Három testvére volt: István (először Vajk, 980 körül, Magyarország királya), Ilona (990 körül, Orseolo Ottó velencei dózse felesége), Sarolta (991 körül, Aba Sámuel magyar király felesége). Judit 985-ben hozzáment Vitéz Boleszláv lengyel fejedelemhez, miután az az első feleségét eltaszította magától. Házasságukból egy gyermek: Bezprym született, aki rövid időre lengyel fejedelem lett. 989-ben Boleszláv eltaszította magától Juditot is. Judit másodjára is férjhez ment, Gavril Radomir bolgár trónörököshöz. Házasságukból egy fiú: Delján Péter, a későbbi bolgár cár született. Judit valamikor 1030 táján halt meg.

Peter Delyan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He was proclaimed emperor (tsar) of Bulgaria (as Samuils grandson) in Belgrade (summer 1040). His origin is not clear. He claimed that he was son of emperor Gavril Radomir and grandson of Samuil, but he could also be a some local who became leader of uprising and used the story that he's Samuil's grandson to justify his proclamation for tsar.

Delyan as Radomir's son

Those who believe he actually was Radomir's son, think that he was born from Radomir's marriage with Marguerite, sister of King Stephen I of Hungary (996/997). Peter's mother was expelled while pregnant from the Samuil's court before the accession of Gavril Radomir, but given Delyan's subsequent career, it is likely that he had been born and remained in Bulgaria with his father (see Fine, reference below).

After Ivan Vladislav murder of Gavril Radomir in 1015 and the conquest of Bulgaria by the Byzantine Empire in 1018, Delyan was taken captive to Constantinople and became a servant of an unidentified member of the Byzantine aristocracy. He later escaped and went to his mother's country of Hungary, from which he re-entered Bulgaria and raised a revolt against Byzantine rule, taking advantage of the discontent over the imposition of taxes in coin by the Byzantine government.
