About Kahinu Miller Mela Nauku

Now this is fascinating!

From other Tilton Ohana Cousin genealogists, I learn that other researchers regard great, great, great grandma Kahinu Miller Mela Nauku as a daughter of The Big Wondrous Ali'i? Kamehameha I?

Wow! Lptm

Stranger things are possible in Ancient times, when NOT viewed from a western and biblical lens as we are prone to do.

It is true that great great great grandpa Alika Mela, II/Jr. (her brother) may have truly regarded her children as his, ...and taught such to lines he felt needed to know his mana'o.....

and yet another kane (John Nauku) may have been regarded as Kahinu's mate before the nineteenth century, Occidental/western/kanaka maoli world in general...

by other genealogists of various Miller-Mela/Tilton lines and cousin lines.

That was common...to have two kane claiming the keiki from the same wahine in the days of Lono... thereby sending two different genealogical charts down to two different lines... so that each Kane's Ohana was told what each Kane felt HIS descendants needed to know and to teach.

My chart shows me coming from Kahinu along with the periodic oral instruction that said, "This is your chart from your great great great grandfather, Alika Mela."

In fact one of my ancient grandmothers has been so claimed by more than two kane, at least where the claiming of the subsequent keiki are concerned.

This is because the ancients regarded all the keiki of sisters and brothers as: The children of ALL siblings in common.

My publication with mo'olelo will report what I was instructed, shown, and given; I have to be true to my instructing kupuna. Lptm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conflict between cousins on grandma's birthdate? Go to the State Archives behind/right side of Iolani Palace. Ask clerk to show you the great Mahele. Turn to "Alika Mela," page 457-458! Then ask yourself: Is a birthdate for Kahinu more probable for 1798? Or 1898?
I have be told that she was born in or around 1798.  Source: Oral family history/belief of two (2) ancient cousin Ohana genealogists, based on the mainland!
Then see the human who said the 1898 date was correct. Ask for her/his document that could also hold up in court. Ask self: What will a judge most likely say? (If it gets to that.) I believe this genealogical recoded-keeper is absolutely wrong!
I suspect he/she might say there were two Kahinu(s)? Is this possible? Of course, but then...clarification and finer discernment are needed!. Lptm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am publishing what I was taught/charged with/told to do... so I can be done with kanaka maoli kuleana once and for all.... and move to follow ONLY... the genealogy principles/instruction of Father Lord.

- Page 14: "The Bible contains several lists of ancestors, called genealogies."

- Question: Why are genealogies a part of the Bible?

- Like the Kanaka Maoli:..."The Hebrew people passed on their beliefs through oral tradition. For many years in many places, writing was primitive or nonexistent."

Source: Life Application Study Bible, New Living Translation...second edition; first published, 1996. Lptm

- Commenting: While priests are believed to have had both a sacred, secret and highly-kapu'd oral and written language...it was not kept forever. When it was felt that it had been compromised, it was destroyed/changed. Plus there is a possibility that any such written language would look more like petroglyphs/hieroglyphics, rather than what the first westerners to Hawaii Nei would recognize as a "respectable" written language, comparable to what the west had.

The kahuna priests would not correct the assumptions of foreigners. Even today....westerners do not know all the secrets of the priests, and once said priests are about to die, it is said that much of their secret knowledge, language and codes are destroyed with them. What they can and want to reveal, is passed down and revealed by their descendants only after they have been buried....and are unreachable. Lptm

Then again, never assume you know all there is to know about the ancients. The maka'ainana were NOT taught the secrets of the priests. So all they could do is guess by what they observed and what they assumed from chance hearing. Such awarenesses were often freely told to westerners during the 19th century as the Hawaiian became more open and increasingly enamored with all things foreign. Lptm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- More from page 14: "Stories were told to children who passed them on to their children."
Commenting: We call them mo'olelo; that is how I was taught by mom and other kupuna....with stories in secret sessions under-lock-and-key in a home where all humans were gone....using chart... ...with mom on the phone during such sessions, being given additional information, directives, and encouragement.
I was never told who was on the other side of the phone line; mom apparently had been told not to identify the callers who interrupted our instructional sessions. I was not to know. Fine with me. I was an obedient child. I trusted my parents. If I wasn't to know, I didn't want...to know. Lptm
- Continuing on page 14: "Genealogies gave a skeletal outline that helped people remember the stories."
  Commenting: The chart and documents were also used for my instruction.  Lptm
- Back to page 14: "For centuries these genealogies were added and passed down from family to family."
  Commenting: My chart came, it is believed....to be, from about 1880...passed down/remade as it fell apart....from generation to generation....until mom was charged with creating a new copy of what the kupuna gave/shared/told her... for me as my kuleana chart.
My second chart...another copy is believed....to be, from about 1880 also..passed down/remade as needed...from generatuon to generation...until Ohana Aunt Ruth Edna for the Tavares lines handed her personal copy to my dad, for his genealogist....which turned out to be me.
By turning her copy over to dad, Aunt Ruth Edna was telling dad: My ohana is no longer keeping our Tilton-Tavares genealogy. My ohana has no more use for it. You take over, Kini...for us, as well as your side.
This is my understanding.
If I am wrong, I would appreciate some authorized cousin from the Tavares side ...telling me so. I attended events to return the Tavares version, but it seemed true; the descendants were not interested in any way. Lptm
- Back to page 14: "Even more important than preserving family tradition, genealogies were included to confirm the Bible's promise that the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ, would be born into the line of Abraham."
Commenting: This is why I still hear cousin genealogists say..."The ancients in the inner core of ali'i always believed in a Supreme God, over all things.....creator of heaven and earth....more powerful and Holy than all other gods we used to worship."
I usually nod and get away from the subject fast. Because by the time it came to me....the Jesus part of the kanaka genealogy had been lost for centuries...except for the 4th to the 9th generations immediately above me...
unless the Kanaka had gotten re-educated and re-purposed... after Queen Kaahumanu and her ali'i supporters turned to the Congregational missionaries of the 1820's. Lptm
- Rest of page 14, footnotes: "Genealogies point out that people are important to God as individuals. Therefore, God refers to people by name, mentioning their life span and descendants."
Commenting: In other words...God's attention and love is on the individual....on you....and me. Hence, once I publish on Geni, I will return back to the original source of even Kanaka Maoli genealogy....the Holy Bible, for my genealogy and guidance in life. Prayer, reflection to God Almighty/Father Lord....through Jesus Christ with the comfort and guidance of the Holy Spirit of God's TRUTH.
Be aware: I am Bible-centered; if this discomforts you, stop. Go no further.
I do not wish to offend or hurt anyone's feelings. I am not even interested in converting anyone. Only God and His Holy Spirit of Truth can convert flawed human beings. You and I are flawed human beings. None of us have the power to win souls; we can only share the Good News and let the rest happen by the Spirit and you. The rest is not my business. Lptm
Friday, 21 August 2020, 11:07 AM!
I have been sitting on knowledge of a huge, well known cousin ohana genealogy for at least 13 years without acknowledging it, ...
for fear that I would be viewed as seeking prestige I did not deserve,...
by linking this well-documented ohana,...
to mine to enhance myself and mine.
However, finding myself caught in between so many different opposing cousin ohana genealogical postures,... I have decided to cite my reference and just "aloha the way more famous ohana than mine at this time"....
and see what happens, if anything.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The reference:

Roots and Branches of Arthur Kapewaokeao Waipa Parker, Sr. and Eva Margaret Vieira by Eva Parker Newton!

Copyright: 1989!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The above well-known Parker family on the Big Island shares at least the same great (4 X's) paternal grandmother, Kanekapolei Kanekapolei,....and her mother, Umiaemoku,.... with the Ontais and Tiltons and others linked already to us, on this website. Lptm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Assuming that my Tilton cousins are correct, when they also believe and publish... that my great great great grandmother, Kahinu Miller Mela Nauku,... does issue forth,....

as an "own true" daughter of Kamehameha I,...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
grandma Kahinu is even closer to the Parker family than we windward O'ahu Tiltons even thought.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I leave it to others,.... to make sense of this limited inclusion as they see fit. Lptm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Recommendation to those interested: Page 620, on....same Holy Bible...
See the Genealogies of Israel and feel free to compare with your personal Ohana genealogy, passed down to you by your kupuna....also in poetry form.....highly dramatic mo'olelo.....to be shared in Kuka Kuka sessions. Remarkable! Lptm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The footnotes are fascinating, page 620: "This record of names demonstrates that God is interested not only in nations but also in individuals.  Although billions of people have lived since Adam, God knows and remembers the face and name of each person.  Each of us are more than a name on a list; we are special persons whom God knows and loves.  As we recognize and accept his love, we discover both our uniqueness as individuals and our solidarity with the rest of his family."

Response: What a warm, fuzzy feeling to learn this! Is why ....with this publication....I walk away from Kanaka Maoli genealogy and follow my Lord, Jesus. Lptm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I do the following piece from the Oral Family History Mo'olelo taught me by my parents (mainly mom, deputized by dad's elders) and my other elder Tilton ohana kupuna... recalling a pressing and anxious time in my young life..... when they saw their generation leaving life on earth...
to meet their Maker,...
and knowing that they needed one more generational genealogist following my Auntie Lucas "Lucy" Tilton, I... to learn how to do western, kanaka, asian research....
that successor keiki genealologist...
then to "lock down" their understanding of their "true" genealogy .....
taught her....
and finally coming/ending up in three parts....
her, to lock it down and seal/publish it.... before Tilton genealogists... as the last mo'olelo... of kupuna Alika P. Miller Mela, Jr. and Kahinu, his full sister....
at least where the Kanekapolei Miller Mela Tilton/Lalio/Lalionui Tilton/Palaika Tilton/Alana Kini Tilton... directly descending line...
was concerned.
That last successor genealogist, turned out to be me... Lucas/Lu (II) Loetha/Leotha Puanani/Nani Ontai Tilton Matsumoto. Lptm
As early as I could recall, I would hear occassional whispers above/around me... when kupuna came together....
"Puanani/Nani is the one." Lptm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I have decided to reveal the Palapala/Oral/Document genealogy at this time using the Geni engine, for I have come to trust its ability to preserve our individual line mana'o in a manner I respect.

Thank you, Geni website managers... working with so many Tilton internet surfers/record keepers/genealogical searchers/genealogisrts.

You do a great service for the descendants of Ali'i Chiefess Kanekapolei and her several husband/mates.

Aloha to you at Geni, for your patience with all of us... using your services. Lptm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In many ways Alana Kini's (daddy's) genealogy is the same as that being published by other Tilton Cousin Ohana lines.
Except for one major difference: Ours differs in one major manner,... and the difference centers around grandma Kahinu, her full brother and my grandfather Alika Junior,... and Kahinu's public/official/dynastically-proclaimed husband... dear wondrous, loyal...Nauku.
I consider him my great great great Grand Step-father. Should future research convince my line descendants that Alika Junior's mo'olelo must be relegated to pure myth....the Nauku would have to become my own true, biological great great great grandfather, as other cousin lines now believe.
That would make me very sad, for that would again deal great great great grandpa Alika Junior... yet another "loss,... another "blow" by the winds of TIME. Lptm
In our view...Nauku performed his kuleana magnificently.
We love and honor his memory at this time. Lptm
Daddy's line always believed that before Nauku, grandma Kahinu was counseled/guided/led... to marry her own brother in the ancient Kanaka Maoli manner during the reign of Kamehameha I.... under the auspicious offices of kahuna.
It was my impression that at least two other descending Ohana lines believed this, too...and carried the palapala chart plus the Oral chant/song/story... as we/I did. I have spent my life looking for a genealogist from the Keo and the Kele lines, for I soon discovered who they really were.
No such luck.
Grandpa Alika,.... dear wonderful, tragic, courageous, humbled, and persevering grandpa...
if what my line carried down to me is your truth....
the other two lines you told us about through the charts and your mo'olelo...
have NOT revealed two more such as I, with a similar story... at least.... and as expected. Lptm
Your mo'olelo, the secret ORAL part, to unmask the coded beginning of the palapala genealogy charts... other than what I was taught and can recall... has apparently been lost... by the other two descending ohana...
most likely, deliberately...
....once (I assume)...
the elders of those two cousin Ohana decided it was no longer relevant to 20th and 21st century realities...
facts on the Hawai'i Nei... "ground." Lptm
It saddens me that it looks like I am one of the keiki, if not the only one...left to tell the tale...with no corroboration from any other of the two other cousin lines. I would have wanted to kuka kuka with my counterparts. I would have wanted them supporting me at this time with this Geni piece. Lptm
All my retirement life (for about eleven years now)... I have been searching for the others.
I was convinced that I would most likely find one or more counterpart cousins... in at least Kele's ohana. My first and only meeting with one cousin of the Kele lines, the Alice line,... was unsuccessful. If there had been one still living in that cousin Ohana,... I think she went to her grave... without passing any such genealogy... down to a successor-genealoglist.... to carry out the last kuleana... similar to mine.
Grandpa, I think...your story of successive "loss" and tragedy..
today, can only be told by me.
Do you know what that means?
I am outnumbered by other equally-sincere and dedicated/purposeful... Tiltons... who only know the Dynastic storyline,...
not your own hidden...
true, biological, Kanaka-sacred storyline! Lptm
Such is the way of hidden versus surviving...acknowledged... history.
The victors' values dominate; the vanquished indigenous losers' values... fade away... into the realm of folktales/legends/myth.
So be it,.. but grandpa... let it be recorded here and now... that Frank Alana Kini Tilton, IV... and Muriel Elizabeth Ontai Tilton... succeeded in what they promised to do for their Miller Mela/Tilton kupuna and you...
through me,...
their eldest daughter and genealogist. Lptm
Grandpa, I love you... and pray that Jesus will let me see you... and Kuka Kuka with you... at least once.
Aloha, Nani.....Lptm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I had to give a descendant of that Kele ohana my Kanaka Maoli, training chart ... as she lamented that... she never received such from her own kupuna.

The Oral Mo'olelo was held back from her by me, because I was reluctant to pass that on to an elderly ohana cousin at the time. Better it be kept secret... until I had to let it go... after I had completed my research and decided my next move. Lptm

The time to let this mo'olelo go is now, for the events in the media that suggest the coming of hard times for all of earth's inhabitants... plus my own elderly age... suggest that I had better reveal the mo'olelo before I, too, die... without having passed it on... to all in need to at least consider what my line/Ohana had to share. Lptm

One never knows when the Lord will call one... when one will be taken to one's eternal home with Father Lord and Lord Jesus, the Christ. Time is short. Lptm

Essentially, our inherited charts (two of them)... feature a beginning graphic portion, at the very TOP of the chart... that focuses primarily on grandpa Alika (junior), his sister (Kahinu), his punahele (Kele)... and a mystery "mother" figure (Keo).

I say mystery "mother" figure, because it was my understanding that while it looked as though she was Alika Junior's wife(to the western-untutored mind),...

we knew she was really Alika Junior's link...WAY... ROAD....PATH...CANOE-paddled DESTINY....

back to Ke Akua/God Almighty...

the One True God of all mankind. Lptm

"Mother" figure because in Hapa-Kanaka Alika Junior's mind.... he had had the blessing of many wives and many mothers... in accordance with the ancient kanaka WAY of doing things...

but one of the purported "wives" acknowledged on the coded charts...

was really his sacred and highest ranking MOTHER... also in accordance with the ancient kanaka WAY of doing things. Lptm

Besides revealing to the descendants of his sister and himself...

revealing the highest ranking mother he had had....

hidden on the western spaceline on the charts.... usually reserved for wife...

and called a hard-to-find, unlikely name (Keo)...

the charts also revealed only one (1) keiki...the highest ranking child (Kele) of his...

recorded in the space on the charts...

as the link to the new rising 20th century, western line...

no longer fully acknowledging him.....

and again, according to ancient kanaka WAYS....

recorded in such a manner as to appear to be a kane...

to western-untutored minds. Lptm

Fancy work, grandpa!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the contradiction amongst Tilton genealogists that still exists today and still necessitating major, ongoing research even today..... in hopes that the mystery may be further resolved/proven,...
though it is believed that it never will ever fully be...
the nature of the discrepancy only solvable at this time (two hundred years later)...
by a Gracious God Who could Tell Us Absolute Truth.
It is possible that He will not substantiate what we contend here, for what we are saying follows tradition, not HIS Way...His Expectations for His Worshipful children? Hmnnnn....
Thank goodness, He still loves us, wants us humans... cherishes and wants to forgive us...right? Lptm
1. The official belief that has been upheld by most lines is that Kahinu married a Nauku and had my great great grandmother, Kanekapolei Miller Mela Nauku Tilton and her brother...Kahumoku Miller Mela Nauku.
2. However, the chart I was trained on from age 11 to 14, with updates from time-to-time until I was 37 and finally
    ...when I was secretly initiated into then "owning" this chart and the kuleana for mom and dad..
    in my own living room....
    once my European/American husband and our son left the house to shop.....
suggests something quite different.
a. The chart when read by one wearing a western pedigree-trained "hat".....or brain/mindset.....
         "says" that which we have come to believe  is NOT TRUE,....
          but was  deliberately so recorded....
          to mislead any human (kanaka or otherwise)...
          who read the chart...
WITHOUT also knowing the second secret Mo'olelo...
          that was faithfully taught orally...
          by the instructing/training/assigned...kupuna...
          to specifically-selected keiki in at least three line ohana...
          perhaps more.  Lptm
b. If this second interpretation is correct, it seems only one ohana line received the oral mo'olelo along
          with the chart.  That was my line, directly taught by a mother...
          repeating what she had been taught....
          to then teach me...
          in a locked room with no witnesses,....
          while dad took the other keiki out of the home....
          to prevent discovery...
          by them.  Lptm
c. at a time when even mom...
            never really fully comprehending what her husband's Tilton kupuna had instructed her, to teach me.
             Lptm
d. When I "learned" this two-prong/part...
              approach to the chart,...
              faithfully passed down from grandpa Alika...
I kept telling mom that the oral mo'olelo she told me did not jive with the top part of the actual chart.
Her reply: "Go get the documents when you finally retire, and it will all make sense to you then. What
              you do with what you learn at that time...
              at a time in the future...
               when dad and I most likely be gone...
is then up to you.....
up to you and only YOU...
what you decide to do with the knowledge." Lptm
e. Today? In the Year 1015, September?
My response to a long-gone mom: "Yeah, mom.....um,....ok....I will share it with those who might feel
                they need-to-know,...
                for what it is worth."
Actually....I was sure I would find other line genealogists who would also know the contradicting mo'olelo.
           To date, no such success.  Kanaka history is paved with unrealized Hopes, I am thinking.  Lptm
f. This purported "palapala deception" seems to have been deliberate by great great great grandpa,
           Alexander Alika P. Miller Mela, Jr....the first Hapa-Caucasian/Kanaka Maoli in our otherwise, thentofore...
           kanaka line.  And research suggests that this second interpretation of the top-half of my training
           chart...was possible, even probably...TRUE.
g. Grandpa seems to have done this to enable his descendants to all survive in the coming Overthrow when
           missionary  descendants (of the original missionary boatloads) would become the new, but doggedly
           believed to be illegal, not pono,...
            ...overlords of Hawaii Nei.
I have nothing but aloha and forgiveness for the overthrowers, the sovereignty cousins, OHA registrants,
            Bloods, Akaka advocates, myself....and so forth.  I wish their descendants and mine.... "well" in their
             life pursuits.
My One God reminds me not to Judge; He is the Only ONE who can Judge His children,...
             down through the Ages.
And He will Assign that Right to His Only Begotten, Perfect, Self-Sacrificing SON...
             in due time.  Lptm
Below portion, still in revision..../ /
       h. Grandpa Alika P. Miller Mela, Jr......died in 1890, three years BEFORE the first overt Overthrow move by
            "foreign-citizen/naturalized/visiting" men, led by originally-foreign Missionary descendants and Hawai'i
            Kingdom citizens.
It was three years AFTER grandpa had witnessed the first formal Overthrow in 1887 with the notoriously-
            called...Bayonet Constitution,...
            so named by Queen Liliuokalani...
            to make sure her people knew what she thought of this blatant power grab by those she steadfastly
            believed to be...
            Kingdom ingrates.  Lptm
e. Grandpa was sending down genealogical information to his kanaka maoli Kingdom line of descendants
              in hopes that that line would be re-activated in their proper rank...should the Queen's Hopes were
              actually realized by a Righteous and Just, Merciful and Loving....God Almighty through His Son, Jesus
              Christ.
f. Looks like Queen Liliuokalani's hopes and grandpa's supportive genealogical dictates are at this time...
             NOT as God Almighy SEES THINGS.  Bible-centered believers always believe that this Just and
             Righteous God is always in control and that HE does as HE Sees Fit....
             that we can plead, pray and Hope,...
             but HIS ultimate WILL is always done.  Amen.  Lptm
3. Suffice it is to report at this point in our research: The second interpretation/reading of the chart
    is that before great great great grandma married a Nauku, she had married and mated at a younger
    age with her full, Hapa brother....Alika Miller Mela, Jr.....
    at a time when such was done and accepted by the Ali'i as part of the Kapu System....
    during the reign of Kamehameha I.
4. This sounds so bizarre in 2015, but there it is.....I share my Mo'olelo...
    taught me alongside the actual chart, passed down from generation...
    from kupuna-to-kupuna.....
For what it might be worth to ohana genealogists for consideration in their on-going investigations. Lptm
5. At my age as I ready myself for my dear Maker and His Savior Son, what we Tiltons actually promote as Truth
   matters not.  The only genealogy I consider major for me, where I am destined...
   is the one that takes me directly to God Almighty and His Son, By Grace and Faithe in the ONE.  Lptm
6. I leave this puzzle to my greater Tilton Ohana for what it is worth as a teaser to make your future research
    both tantalizing and intriguing.  Happy Hunting!  Lptm
7. One more comment: The constitutional overthrow of 1887 and the impending actual overthrow he told his keiki
    to expect after his death...was not a surprise to grandpa as he approached his end on Planet Earth.
a. Around the 1850's he and other ali'i already knew that with the loss of his/their Kau Kau, Konohiki ali'i
         status at the onset of Kamehameha IV's reign....
         and with the death of his kinsman, Kamehameha III to death...
         that resulted in his adopted son's assumption of the kingship...
there were signs that the Kingdom would most likely be taken over by western men when the Kingdom
         seemed most desperate and vulnerable....
and when the U.S. provided the military/political means...
          westerners to succeed in an overthrow by supporting the
           economically-strong planter/merchant/mission...leader-part of the population.
b. Many kanaka joined with the overthrowers officially and can be noted in the book, Oath of Allegiance,
            kept today in the State Archives on the left/back side of Iolani Palace.  A few of those kanaka were
            actually Kanaka Maoli Kingdom-loyal, having signed up OSTENSIBLY to support the Overthrow...
when in fact they had signed up to malama the maka'aina who would be summarily "kidnapped" and
             declared citizens of the invading/grabbing foreign  nation...
             whether they liked it or not...
and would need Bible-centered Kanaka pastors to minister them in their "soft, in-place...
             aina.....Babylonian.... Captivity."   One of such kanaka was a great great grand Half-Uncle.
Another, his wife, a Kau Kau ali'i in her own right...followed him to serve her Queen in a passive,
             peaceful, caretaker.... role...
             designed to preserve the Kingdom's national treasures with the assured expectation.....
that sooner or later, the Overthrowers...being led by professed Bible-centered Mission Boys...
             would experience a deep conviction of Conscience...
and use their power to return the Kingdom back to the citizens and rightful originators/owners of that
             Kingdom..
the ali'i and maka'aina of Hawai'i Nei.
d. This hopeful reconcilliation/restoration never happened.
e. The hoped-for repeat of history, in the vein of the earlier historic British restoration of the Kingdom back
               to  Kamehameha III...
               never materialized with the American missionary-led, foreign overthrowers....
              for Bible-dependent, Queen Liliuokalani.
f. The concept of American Belief in their Manifest Destiny, coupled with the
              conviction that "good" westerners must save the natives by taking over everything...
              dominated in the 1880's and 1890's...
as grandpa Alika Jr. knew that his end was near. Lptm
4. So he sent down to his descendants, proof of different plans/futures/genealogy...
     for different lines.  Lptm
One afternoon at a Kapiolani Park al'i celebration for the Kalakaua Dynasty and the Scots, in a genealogy booth/vendor... I casually mentioned I had a funeral to attend that my genealogy colleague said, he, too...was attending.
When I got there, that colleague had another man....a very well-known researcher of the Kamehamehas. He shall remain anonymous at this time as I do not think he wants me to name him in this fashion.
That respected genealogist and writer/publisher asked me if I was descended from Kamehameha I, more specifically...if my better-known baby brother (now serving people in the community)...was a Kamehameha descendant.
I knew... I had received kupuna whisperings and Kapu genealogy passed down from generation-to-generation that seemed to assert such, but my back was up, stiff and unyielding....because an immigrant relation of mine had recently and sarcastically cast doubts on Kanaka Maoli genealogy from her ignorant, non-Hawaiian...foreign perspective. "Everybody is, seems to be... descended from Kamehameha." Implication: Do not believe the Hawaiians with their genealogy Sigh...
I decided never to allow her to get anything of worth from me on the Kanaka unless she became more humble and sincerely interested in the host culture, mainly mine....and admitted at least to herself, that not being Kanaka....she did not know enough to cast aspersions, Lptm
I also knew that my training kupuna had said, all Kapu genealogy remains kapu'd except on a specific need-to- know basis so as to minimize more kanaka secrets ending up making somebody rich with western-type publication and pride....and, thus, opening the ancient Hawaiians to unfair, demonizing assertions that could only injure Kanaka sensibilities.
Unless/until I had documents/major experts of the past and the present with which/whom I could reliably and publicly cite...without helping negative people to do their mischief against the kanaka maoli.
I was in the midst of research with other cousins; we did not have enough independent proof with which we could feel comfort....just yet to even admit what I am doing so today.
So I responded, "I have no proof that my siblings and I descend directly from Kamehamemeha I."
Strange, but after asserting in that minimal fashion, I felt righteous, because my research was turning up alarming tidbits about our beloved King Kamehameha I which prompted me not to claim him, even obliquely... until I knew I should.
Mind you, I am never ashamed of my ancestors....for The Holy Bible says we are not to be judged by our ancestors. Each/all human will be judged by how he/she/ they lived the precious gift of life on planet earth. Kamehameha I will also be judged that way.
I just wanted more information. Recently, I learned more about who Kamehameha I really was....and how he and his Ahu Ali'i (ruling council of family al'i) ruled the islands they conquered. Yup! I will not take on his sins; he can own up to them before Jesus on Judgement Day. I will own up to my sins against the One True God Almighty through Jesus with The Holy Spirit of The One. But I do respect and admire how this ancient Father of Many, Ali'i of all Kanaka....and gifted above many others....lived his life in service and sacrifice to his people. We should love our own as much. Lptm
Further investigation of the two lines which may take my Ontai-Tilton line directly to Kamehameha I, revealed tidbits that (while in evidence with humans all over the world), might be used by sarcastic, cynical, disdaining non-Hawaiians in their negative pronouncements on Oahu... against today's Hawaiians.
So even more so, I will not claim Kamehameha I officially until I can no longer not,... do it in books written by expert authors/genealogists. I am taking the cowards way out, so I applaud other cousin genealogists who have more courage with this Geni website.
Yes, the assertions here made by cousin genealogists....can be substantiated by just knowing true and sacred al'i practices during Kamehameha's days. Now to get back to the investigation of this impressive and most probably.....kupuna of some sort.
Aloha for taking the plunge at least with us cousin genealogists. We do not enter the conversation with disdain, but with sincere love, appreciation, and a shared need to get at Truth....as allowed by God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Lptm
Great great great grandma Kahinu is the mystery kupuna for the Tiltons. Some of us wish we had a sketch of her as drawn when she lived. Lately, I have been made aware of how various keiki are being assigned essays to write on their living and/or deceased kupuna. This is not difficult, if one's teacher asks for the basic and classic 5-paragraph essay. Both Public School and Private School teachers teach this composition skill/genre.
However, when a keiki asks an elder....."How do I make my essay more sincere, more research based? How can I include much more information from my research beyond the five minimal paragraphs? What do I do when teacher asks for more?"...
when asked such questions clearly from an advanced keiki, what does an elder do?
I will attempt such an essay below for whatever use our keiki can get from it:
Kahinu,... Mystery Kupuna of Old
by a 21st century… descendant-kupuna, Nani
Final, for the time being….to be used within the ohana as needed!
[1. The Attention-Getter:...]
Kahinu Miller Mela Nauku,.....she is on the chart mom and dad first gave me, a chart that showed she was my great great great Tilton grandmother! If one interpreted that chart Western style, she seemed to be married to Kele, who seemed to be son to Alika Miller Mela, whom mom often reminded me ....was my great great great Tilton grandfather.
What!?
[2. The topic made personal, to me:...]
When I told mom that was what I saw on the chart spread out on her bed behind the locked master bedroom door, she got hysterical as though she was teaching me badly and what I had said was not only wrong.....but very wrong. Through many "hysterical" sessions, I realized the chart spoke many ways depending on the reader's perspective/context/bias.
I was to be careful how I read it.
What?!
To the western descendant learning what she/he was to tell westerners....that is exactly what the chart was saying.
But mom said there was another meaning that would tell me the "truth" my kupuna wanted me to learn/use in the 20th/21st century with/for the keiki, and it would be found by securing documents/research safely placed with agencies by our kupuna of old, waiting for me to find them.
"Go get the documents, Nani."
I was to gain truer understanding of my "kaona" chart with documents I found, created by and on humans now deceased and having lived way before I was born. The hope was that the chart would be better understood when read and deciphered against the results of my subsequent document research. A special part of the document research would involve studying very seriously the 19th Century Kingdom o Hawaii publications of ancient Kanaka Maoli Ways.
And all this had to be guided by My Lord whose Way is the very Essence of Truth. And that is why dad and mom initiated me into my kuleana "office" with prayer to One God and One God Only.......God Supreme/God Almighty!
So I knew the documents would tell me the ohana Truth, and that was superior to what one got when just reading the chart as is...at least at the top of the chart. (Was this in case the chart was stolen or got lost? And strangers were reading it? Hmmnnn....sounded very ali'i/kanaka/maka'ainana...)
[3. My Thesis Statement:...]
Kahinu, I think, is the ancient kupuna of great importance to the Tiltons, because with her I will discover who we were and what we had/have to do to survive, succeed and find fulfillment as children of 19th century, annexed kanaka maoli....nurtured for many subsequent decades as Part-Hawaiian/Multi Ethnic, American citizens.... of the United States of America...in what was once the Kingdom of Hawai'i fully and totally, but is now called the 50th State of Hawaii by so many.
[4. Setting/Tone established:...]
My first home was in Pawa'a at the corner of King Street and Alexander Street, until I was four. This was the home mom and dad brought me to after I was born at Kapiolani Maternity Hospital. At that age, we moved to Hausten Street, until I was five. So the island of my birth was O'ahu during territorial days.
Then came a home in Hilo, on the Big Island, followed by a home in Kailua, O'ahu from my second grade year in school, to my first year in college at the University of Hawaii. Then a home in Kapahulu, from which I got married and flew/sailed off to Europe for a two year period as an officer's wife with my husband.
Then back to O'ahu.
The point: I am an O'ahu girl except for trips of short duration. This is just what my mom wanted. She told me, the other siblings could move elsewhere, away from Hawai'i Nei... but not me. As genealogist, I had to keep my feet firmly on O'ahu 'aina/soil and stand as needed for my kupuna buried all over O'ahu and even on some of the outer islands.
Why? Once the kupuna of mom's and dad's generation passed away, mischievous challenges and half-truths would materialize from various corners of the islands to advance other peoples'/other relatives' agenda...perpetuated by descendants of other ohana.
It was the way of Hawai'i Nei.
Most would not be negative. Much would be merely to get at whatever truth we might have to enable them to find out more about their own kupuna. I was to love, forgive and share what I knew that others needed to know, but always based on Oral Family History backed up (ideally) with documents, charts, journals, and so forth.
Such was my kuleana.
It has been especially rewarding doing the publication and sharing, essentially... on Geni.com, for the website masters manage this site very well, very much in pono fashion...with due respect to the kanaka's need for enough privacy and ability to explain oneself.
I have discovered so many dear relations and friends; we have helped each other with aloha and tolerance for our respective opinions, findings, and views.
The sharing has been so sweet, respectful and gentle. There is peace, joy and harmony working on this website with the genealogy in this share/tell manner. ...working under the format they have devised.
[5. And now the Body of the Essay... with three major points to back up my thesis statement above, with added details:...]
First of all, two documents from the State Archives show that Alika Miller Mela was a Junior, for there was an Alika Miller Mela Senior,... known fully, as Alexander Alike Miller Mela, Sr./I. Alika Junior was younger brother (we think) to Kahinu Miller Mela, whom a cousin line said was born in 1798. We are of the belief that Alika was born in 1800. Research is on-going.../ /
Once I secured the first two major documents from the archives...I found myself wanting to say to mom: "Ok, mom...the ohana 'truth' is not looking like the western truth I use to 'get'... at the top of the family chart. Kele was not Alika Junior's son, but his daughter,…his heir...
and Kahinu was not Kele's wife, but her aunt.
Wow! Deliberate subterfuge to mislead those who should not be privy to the chart? Awesome."
The second document showed that Alika Miller Mela, Junior was a konohiki to Kamehameha III. So his rank, just before he became a farming maka'ainana... was that of Kau Kau Ali’i…the working, managing rank and link…between other higher-ranked ali’i and the maka’ainana.
Kahinu marries John Nauku and seemingly disappears from Occidental history. Research continues../ /
[6. Second major point to back up my thesis statement above, with added details:...]
Secondly, dictionary research suggests that Alika was Kahinu's half brother, not full....for his name is that of one with only 50% kanaka maoli and her name suggests she was full kanaka maoli and very sacred to the ancients.
So we went into ancient research and found why a half brother might be driven to claim a full kanaka half-sister as his “wife" for the greater ohana "truth"...three years before an armed, foreign-concocted "overthrow" seemed eminent (1893). After all, the Bayonet Constitutional "overthrow" had occurred three years (1887) before Alika Junior passed away! He must have felt anxious and helpless to protect his loved ones, including his own sister, Kahinu and her beloveds.
What to do to extend one's aloha and protection beyond his death to all his/sister's beloveds?
Especially when Kahinu's line was way more “kanaka" in beliefs, practices and lifestyle....than were brother Alika's three major descending lines...and the future seemed to belong to the assimilated kanaka, not the ancient practicing, revering kanaka.
Besides the security of the gods and the 'aina in ancient times, the ancient kanaka depended on the greater ohana of many many inter-related lines. How to get lines descending from him to aloha Kahinu and hers even though her line was still very kanaka and his lines were becoming more and more assimilated as maka'ainana, Americanized.... and/or Honored Hawaiian political/societal group leaders? How to draw Kahinu's humble/powerless desendants closer to his lines?
We think that was Alika Junior's dilemma as he neared his own approaching death.
Kanaka often announced marriages... that were not really “mating" marriages within the privacy of the ohana but more like “guardianships"... to the occidental world, right? Or at least to one or two lines, right?
Until they became Bible-centered and decided to have but one mate, right?
So why did Alika Junior send down to a few Kahinu lines, like mine, the belief that he was my great great great grandfather? Is this what he then expected us to believe, and then to aloha his descending lines should they need our more kanaka “approach" to conflict?
Was that then supposed to re-kindle reciprocal aloha from his descending lines?
Well, it did not. We moved into our own kanaka corner a distance from them, and they moved into their three varying corners...very distant from us.
Never to re-unite again? So far, not re-united.
For the future? I am not sure; besides, I wonder....what for?
The future belongs to God Almighty through Jesus. They call the shots where I am concerned.
Research continues....
Hypothesis: It is very kanaka to claim loved relations as wives before maka'ainana and foreigners (who had every-growing mana at the time)....to extend a kind of protection to that relation and her line of descendants by hoping his own lines, official and otherwise, would look favorably on Kahinu and her keiki as much as possible. It was what Hawaiians did. It was Aloha.
And many foreigners with good hearts and sincere love for the kanaka, also honored such claims as they could. I know of one example when one of my ancient lines was sustained legal, spiritually, and politically for years by generous, caring foreigner/haole/malihini families. There are Righteous and Just humans in all ethnicities, cultures, Ways.
Research is on going.../ /
[7. Third major point to back up my thesis statement above, with added details:...]
Third, when I immersed myself for years in ancient kanaka maoli publications... I found at least five ali'i patterns of behavior/practices/principles in evidence... that seemed to mirror and even explain the life of grandma Kahinu..."seemed," so I still depend on future research and interaction with other researchers.
Pattern One deals with the manner of her conception and ali'i, specifically Kamehameha I's, Mating Practices. Explained in simple occidental language of today: Polygamy was the kanaka way to link one's royal ohana to foreigners whom one valued and allowed to become "family"....to sustain/grow an ever-strengthened and strategic series of new retainer lines- thereby keeping the Ohana ever Strong and Huge.
Result: An impregnable and unsurmountable Wall of Defense against oncoming foreigners who would not/could not be accepted... into the kanaka maoli family for various reasons...a wall of relatives to protect the integrity/viability/sustainability ...of the existing ohana.
I would call this The Octopus Ohana Maintains the Family Forever! (The many arms representing many lines.) A primary example can be found in the ancient publications as one studies how Kamehameha I went about collecting/impregnating so many "wives." Another example is when one very high-ranked ali'i chiefess rejected Kamehameha's advances- what happened to her and her "consequence."
In this second example, one will find that the ali'i nui was quite merciful; not so the women in the situation. While they protected my kupuna, they also tormented her for not obeying the ali’i nui. Unique to the Polynesians? Absolutely not. This strategy is universal. Lptm
Pattern Two deals with the kanaka way of disciplining a retainer/relative, as needed. One example is when Kamehameha invaded the Kingdom of O'ahu and instructed his warriors “ ..to kill all the ali'i on O’ahu…" in revenge for their ohana betrayal and subsequent killing of so many of his fine young warriors on the island of Maui. My own ancient ohana purportedly got caught in this ali'i revenge, for my ancients were on both sides of the Push/Jump of Oahu Warriors, over the Pali at Nuuanu. The charge: Betrayal of the Keawe Family/Kingdom!
Another example deals with Queen Kaahumanu's punishment of one of the ali'i of my ancient family, because our ali'i had betrayed Kaahumanu and, with her husband, even threatened the Queen's life. The charge: Treason and Betrayal of one's superior! Again a universal strategy practiced all over the world.
A Third Pattern/strategy crucial to the maintenance of Peace, Order and Harmony under the kanaka Kingdom was: The symbolic "sacrificing" (not literal/actual)... of a precious "anointed one" to cement bonds with a partial-foreign kanaka retainer line for eternity. Again, a universal strategy; again, so many examples exist in kanaka mo'olelo.
A Fourth Pattern/strategy was the office of genealogists, many who served the Kamehamehas from time to time as needed. It was their job to know where the descendants were, what line and what rank per descendant. Many examples exist to show how this retainer ali'i served his ali'i nui and even stopped wars among ohana relatives spread thoughout several kingdoms. Again, a universal strategy amongst humans on Planet Earth!
A Fifth Pattern/strategy was the office of kahuna/priests who guided and watched subsequent matings of "valued" descendants to keep tabs on the strength and usefulness of various descendant lines with respect to Kingdom mana, Power, and security. Again, a universal strategy not peculiar to the so-called Polynesians, who are better referred to as: The Peoples of the 'Aina Moku of the Great Moana/the Moananui!
So much to digest; so much to study, for those who really want to learn about/through kanaka documents, research, publications, universal strategies and mo'olelo. All this to better understand grandma Kahinu and other ancient Beloveds.
[8. Conclusion:...]
Trying to understand grandma Kahinu, who she was, what she was, what her life was like, and how she ended her much guarded/shrouded existence... is an on-going endeavor. At this time, in mid-research and reflection... I would venture to say the following things about her.
She was highly valued; many descending lines were linked to her. The maternal senior line of the Tiltons uses her name with descending keiki from time to time as is their right...with little accompanying fanfare. The paternal junior line uses the western name, Frank, for the Occidentals and subsequent kanaka names for intra-ohana business-interaction-living...for well-thought out reasons, not to be explained here.
At a certain point in her life, when it had been determined that she was no longer needed in the Miller Mela nuclear family/ohana, she was moved by marriage into the Nauku nuclear family/ohana and, thus, returned to the ancient and shrouded existence all ali'i chiefesses go through unless the ali'i decide they must interact and be a key part of relations with foreigners/occidentals.
Kahinu was too precious to be left exposed to foreigners and maka'ainana. She was what my dad called, a Precious Flower, not a political, religious or kahuna wahine warrior. She was always to be protected wherever she was sent/kept. The ali'i always kept an eye on her safety and mana.
I "know" this loss of an ancient kupuna to us, the make'ainana,... for I believe this kind of "whisking away" by superior ali'i... of one of our ancients occurred at least three times....occurred, I believe... with Kahinu I, Kahinu II and Lalani.
My great great great grandmother, Kahinu Miller Mela Nauku, is still regarded today as a precious flower...still to be loved....sight unseen and never having been personally..."known.” I am guessing that she died around the mid-19th century, approximately a hundred years before my birth!
The end!
Respectfully submitted to model a full essay to the descendant/keiki, as an attempt to explain the existence of one of our most mysterious ancient kupuna......pending more research and future revisions....
Puanani/Nani Ontai Tilton Matsumoto,
My understanding is that this official, legal wife of great great great grandpa's middle age years... was the wife who would take grandpa's sons into the future as keiki of two cultures, plus-
the cultures of the west, the east, as well as the adjusting kanaka maoli.
I think she might have been a member, follower of the Congregational Church of Kawai'aha'o...the same church of my Ontai/Metcalfs/Forsyths? Lptm
