In another version of this event, recorded in Judith Holloway's book, Joseph and Kohu were living in a European-style house at Pomare's pa at Otuihu, on the area where the Kawakawa River flows into the bay. They were in the house in late 1844 when British troops came looking for some runaway convicts thought to be sheltering in the house of a European. In a scuffle the finger of "Hori Kingi's sister", (Kohu) was nicked, drawing blood. This caused a great contretemps among Maori, as the physical person of a rangitira was considered tapu. This was one of theevents which led to the sacking of Kororareka, the revengeful sacking of the Otuihu Pa and to the subsequent land wars in the north.
