BIOGRAPHY

Gladys Muriel BUX was born 21 October 1906 at Cummeragunja Aboriginal Reserve, Moama, New South Wales. Her parents were Merra BAJSCH / BUX and Alice Emma CAMPBELL

Gladys married Howard Herbert "Dowie" NICHOLLS in 1927 in Victoria and they had the following children

  • 1928 Nora
  • 2 other children

Her husband Herbert died on 8 April 1942

Gladys married Douglas Ralph NICOLLS (brother of Herbert) in December 1942 in Moama, New South Wales and they had the following children

(Her children are Bevan, Ralph, Beryl, Nora, Lilian and Pamela)

In 1957 her husband Douglas was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)

In 1968 her husband Douglas was promted to Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)

In 1972 her husband Douglas was appointed Knight Bachelor - the first Aboriginal to be knighted. Gladys and Douglas travelled to England. Gladys became Lady NICHOLS.

On 1 December 1976 her husband Douglas was appointed the Governor of South Australia (resigned 30 April 1977 due to poor health following a stroke on 25 January 1977)

On 20 March 1977 Gladys and her husband Douglas hosted Queen Elizabeth II at Government House as part of the Silver Jubilee tour

In 1977 her husband Douglas was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO)

Gladys died 28 January 1981 in Fairfield, Victoria, Australia and was buried at the Cummeragunja Cemetery



Gladys was an Australian Aboriginal Activist

  • she was inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2008
  • she was inducted into the Indigenous Honour Roll in 2012

A statue of Gladys and husband Douglas was erected in the Parliament Gardens, Melbourne and was the first statues of Aboriginal women erected in Melbourne
