The western Sioux had 22 million acres of land, far more than they needed. If they sold half of it, the government would make it available to homesteaders ..." (The Plains Sioux and U.S. colonialism from Lewis and Clark to Wounded Knee, Jeffrey Ostler 2004)

  • The world will never know whether it was Craft's counseling, McLaughlin's coaching, or Crook's leadership, that brought the 1889 Sioux Bill to a successful conclusion for the government, but this much is certain: with those three aligned against them, the Lakotas had no chance of keeping their lands. - Thomas W. Foley, Father Francis M. Craft, Missionary to the Sioux 2007 p 69.

The Porcupine District on the Pine Ridge Reservation is primarily known for its connection to the Wounded Knee Massacre, as it was near Porcupine Butte where the U.S. 7th Cavalry intercepted a group of Lakota led by Spotted Elk (Big Foot) before being escorted to Wounded Knee Creek, where the massacre occurred on December 29, 1890; this area is considered a significant historical site due to its role in this tragic event in Native American history.

"Porcupine" likely refers to the prickly pine trees that grow in the area, particularly around Porcupine Butte. The area near Porcupine Butte was where the U.S. military intercepted Spotted Elk's band of Lakota before forcibly marching them to Wounded Knee Creek, where the massacre took place.

Biography:
Born c. 1895, Louis Eagle Bear was the son of Oglala Lakota Sioux parents Eagle Bear and Leader (aka Dance Pipe, etc.). Louis had six siblings. By the time Louis was 18, the older children had left, his parents separated in 1913, and the remaining three younger siblings were split between the father, Eagle Bear, and the mother, Dance Pipe.

His father Eagle Bear was a Corporal in the 6th Cavalry, he survived his son Louis until beyond January 1, 1937

According to the book Vanished in Hiawatha, author Carla Joinson states that Louis was committed from the Pine Ridge Reservation on August 2, 1926, and diagnosed with epilepsy (Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder that causes seizures, which are episodes of abnormal electrical activity in the brain.).
