_________
Robert Middleton was in Charles County, Maryland as early as 1671. In that year he was transported into Maryland by Col. Benjamin Rosier, along with
Benjamin Arnold and Thomas Thornton. From the time of his arrival in Charles County, Maryland until his death in that part of Charles County that had become
Prince George County, he was active in advancing both his own and his county's interests in military, civil and church affairs. His wife's parents, Major John and
Mary Wheeler were in Charles and St. Mary's counties, Maryland in the 1640's; however, when he settled in Maryland he recorded that he was "from Virginia."
He probably went to Virginia where some of his children were born and returned to Maryland. His first child, John Wheeler, was born in 1654. It is not known
who Major John Wheeler's wife was, but either she was, or he was a Catholic, or maybe both since the Wheeler family in Maryland ever since this period has been
Catholic and some of our Middletons still in Maryland are Catholics. Robert Middleton was an Episcopalian and remained so and most of his children.

John Wheeler came to Maryland about 1659. He was Captain of the Charles County Militia, 1676, and its Major, 1689, and was Justice of the County Court in 1685. (Ref. Record of John Wheeler as noted by the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Maryland in its 1940 publication, Genealogies of the members and Record of Ancestors: 389). John Wheeler gave his age as 21 years in a deposition dated 22 January 1652. (Maryland Archives, X: 226). As Major John Wheeler he deposed on 22 October 1691 that he was 61 years old. (Charles County Land Records, R-1:275). Mary, his wife, gave her age as 40 years in court on 9 March 1669/70 (Ibid, R-1:275). His will dated 11 November 1693 was probated 9 January 1694/95 (Maryland Wills, 7: 70). By its terms he left bequests or legacies to his 5 sons, but none to his daughters, Mary and Winifred. One of the properties he mentioned was Middleton's Lot, 96 acres, which he devised to his son Francis Wheeler.
Children of John Wheeler and Mary Causine are: i. Mary Wheeler, born 1658; married Robert Middleton; born 1651.
Notes for Robert Middleton: The Middleton family history will be started with the birth of a daughter to Major John and Mary Wheeler on the 22 March 1658, of Charles County, Maryland. This daughter married Robert Middleton and thus we find the name Middleton in Maryland for the first time. He was born about 1651 but the place of his birth has not yet been established as this time. It is believed he is from Somersetshire, England because correspondence is on file in the Maryland Archives between residents of Charles County, Maryland and the above-mentioned place in England. The late Hugh C. Middleton of Augusta, Georgia, expressed the opinion that this Robert Middleton was one of the sons of Anthony Middleton who was, he said, of Charles City, Virginia, in 1623, and that this Anthony was a son of Thomas Middleton who married in England in the late 16th century to a daughter of Dedrick Anthony. (File Case: Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania)
Robert Middleton was in Charles County, Maryland as early as 1671. In that year he was transported into Maryland by Col. Benjamin Rosier, along with Benjamin Arnold and Thomas Thornton. From the time of his arrival in Charles County, Maryland until his death in that part of Charles County that had become Prince George County, he was active in advancing both his own and his county's interests in military, civil and church affairs. His wife's parents, Major John and Mary Wheeler were in Charles and St. Mary's counties, Maryland in the 1640's; however, when he settled in Maryland he recorded that he was "from Virginia." He probably went to Virginia where some of his children were born and returned to Maryland. His first child, John Wheeler, was born in 1654. It is not known who Major John Wheeler's wife was, but either she was, or he was a Catholic, or maybe both since the Wheeler family in Maryland ever since this period has been Catholic and some of our Middletons still in Maryland are Catholics. Robert Middleton was an Episcopalian and remained so and most of his children.
1182 ii. Thomas Wheeler, born 1660; died 1734; married Mildred Neale. iii. Ignatius Wheeler, born 1665; died 1699; married Frances Slye; born Abt. 1669 in St. Mary's County, Maryland; died Aft. 1725 in St. Mary's County, Maryland.
Notes for Ignatius Wheeler: Ignatius Wheeler was born in Charles County, Maryland, May 1665 (Md Archives Vol 60, p 117). He married Francis Slye 11 Nov 1693 (Chancery Records No 3, Pl 1093).

John Wheeler was born about 1635 in Virginia. He died after 1717.
The colony of Virginia continued to grow, both in population and area. Upon the ascent to the throne of the Stuart king Charles I (and ultimately Oliver Cromwell) in 1625, the Crown revoked the charter of the Virginia Company and instituted a royal charter for the Virginia Colony. The central colonial figure during this period in Virginia's history was Sir William Berkeley, who served as the royal governor. Some say Governor Berkeley's rule was extraordinary for its evenhandedness and some say he was a tyrant. He was successful in restraining the colonists' itch for more land, particularly as the encroaching settlements set the stage for Indian reprisals. However, in 1676 a group of rebellious frontier planters were convinced by the governor's cousin, Nathaniel Bacon, of the governor's lack of concern for their safety and economic well being.
Bacon soon found himself at the head of a force of 2,000 men that routed the Pamunkey Indians and ultimately took possession of all Virginia west of the Chesapeake Bay. Although Bacon died in the rebellion, it showed the limits to which the Virginia colonists would permit themselves to be ruled by a tyrant.
It was in this environment that John Wheeler grew to manhood. Nothing is known of his life except when he was mentioned in the will of Ann Lindsey, as cited in the account of his father.
John married an unknown woman about 1670.

12/13/2016 Notes by Suzanne Ashmore:In addition to his wife, Mary, the following are named in his will which was written and proved in Charles County:
Son Thomas; son Ignatius; son Francis; grandson James Wheeler (son of James who died 1684); granddaughter Anne Wheeler; grandson Richard Wheeler, son of Thomas.
Children not in the will are John Jr. – perhaps he already died? There was a John Wheeler who died testate 1688 in Anne Arundel county, with his mother (unnamed) as the only heir. There was also a John Wheeler in Anne Arundel county who died ca 1684, wife Christian and son, John. Did Ball confuse these 2 John Wheeler's of different counties in his book, or was the John Wheeler who died 1688 in AA Co the son of Joh Wheeler of CC? I think not, but cannot be certain.
=============================
Maryland archives/court records seem to be pretty clear that Major John Wheeler lived in Charles County from the time he immigrated until he died. Between 1654 and 1688 he had accumulated 3,293 acres of land in Charles Couty, MD. There are no records that place this particular John Wheeler nor any of his children in Anne Arundel County; they all died in Charles County, MD.
=========================
Do NOT confuse Maj John Wheeler, d. 1694 CC, MD with John Wheeler of AA County, who died 1684!
=========================
Many records/trees at ancestry.com show John Wheeler's wife as Mary Causine, dau of Nicholas Causine Sr., but this has NOT been proven through documentation. Nicholas Causine married around 1644, a widow woman named Jane [nee Hicks]Cockshutt/Cockshot who immigrated to America in 1641 with husband John [dead by 1642] and their 2 daughters, Jane and Mary. Nicholas Causine/Jane Cockshutt had 2 sons, Ignatius and Nicholas, Jr. who are named in will of Nicholas Sr. That will does NOT mention any daughters by the name of Mary or anything else. Jane Hicks Cockshutt Causine married a 3rd time Robert Clarke (no issue that I can find). Jane Causine's dau Mary Cockshutt married Henry Adams and her dau Jane Cockshutt married first Dr. Thomas Matthews, and second John Bread.
