Maria of Castile (1401-1458) was a daughter of Henry III of Castile and Catherine of Lancaster.

Her paternal grandparents were John I of Castile and his first wife Eleanor of Aragon. Her maternal grandparents were John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster and his second wife Constance of Castile (1354-1394). Maria was also an older sister of John II of Castile.

Maria was betrothed to Alfonso V of Aragon in Valladolid in 1408; the marriage was celebrated in Valencia during 1415. Maria had delicate health, and was said to be unattractive.[1] During Alfonso's wars in Italy, she acted as a regent in Aragon. Alfonso and Maria failed to produce children. She was buried in the convent of the Trinidad in Valencia.

Her maternal grandparents were John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster and his second wife Constance of Castile (1354-1394). Maria was also an older sister of John II of Castile.

Maria was betrothed to Crown Prince Alfonso of Aragon in Valladolid in 1408; the marriage was celebrated in the cathedral of Valencia 12 October 1415. One year later, in 1416, Maria and Alfonos became queen and king of Aragon. Maria had delicate health, and was considered to be unattractive; they did not have any children and Alfons had a mistress in Italy [1].. In 1442, her Alfonso became king of Naples, and she became queen of Naples.

Queen Maria played a great part in the reign of her spouse: during his absence from Aragon, she served as his regent in Aragon and Katalonia. And as king Alfonso was absent almost his entire reign, she was the true ruler of Aragon during his tenure. She had the formal title General lieuntenant. Her first teneure as regent lasted from 1420 until 1423, and her second from 1432 until her husband's death in 1458. As such, she was faced to handle the conflicts with the burghers and the peasants which broke out during her husband's reign. When Alfonso was captured after his defeat at Ponza in Italy in 1435, she organized the funds to pay his release. In 1453, she mediated the peace treathy between Aragon and Castile in Valladolid.
