A castle is first recorded on the rocky peninsula at Dunbeath in 1428, when the lands belonged to the Earl of Caithness. The first recorded laird was Alexander Sutherland. It later became the property of the Clan Sinclair through the marriage of the daughter of Alexander Sutherland to William Sinclair (1410–1484), the first Sinclair Earl of Caithness. The Sinclairs replaced the earlier structure with a four-storey tower house in 1620.

Alexander Sutherland of Dunbeath’s family
Historians have long debated this branch of the Sutherland and the parentage of his large family. It has become clear that Alexander Sutherland of Dunbeath and his wife Mariot MacDonald of the Isles only had one child who lived, their daughter Marion Sutherland who married William Calder 7th Thane of Calder. This is based on the fact that Alexander left his property to his legitimate heir, Marion.
In his very detailed will, Alexander left items of property to his children by Katherine Chalmers also referred to as “Kateryn of Chaumer”. These children included his daughter Marjory Sutherland who married William Sinclair who went on to become the 1st Earl and Countess of Caithness.
