About Marmaduke Constable

http://freespace.virgin.net/owston.tj/constab.htm

Marmaduke Constable of Flamborough, Sheriff of Yorkshire, 1360-62, 1366-67 and died 21 May 1378 (Horrox). who married twice, firstly Joan and secondly Elizabeth. He had issue by Joan.

There is good evidence that Joan was Joan la Zouche of Lubbesthorpe in Leicester, the daughter of Roger la Zouche who flourished 1296-1326 and his second wife Foelicia. Her uncle was William la Zouche, Archbishop of York who died in 1352. Marmaduke was his administrator. She brought one third of the Manor of Lubbesthorpe to her descendants.

  • Sir Marmaduke managed to find the resources to rebuild and crenellate his his Manor House at Flamborough (sadly no longer standing - its location can be clearly seen as its foundations are there in the village of Flamborough, not far from the Church).
  • Sir Marmaduke was added to the Commission of peace in 1351 (communities and peoples were changed at this time by the great loss of life and disruption caused by the Black Death outbreak of the late 1340's).
  • He was also able to fill the office of Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1360-62 and 1366-7. He seems to have taken no public office after 1370.
  • A year before he died he had to clear up the events in Holme on Spalding Moor when his Manor House was attacked and his kinsmen John Constable killed.

They had issue: Sir Robert Constable of Flamborough, High Sheriff of Yorkshire. Made his Will 8th January 1400.
