Mary was a daughter of Jacob Cooke and his wife Damaris (Hopkins) Cooke. According to Plymouth Vital Records, she was born 12 January 1657/8 (i.e., 1658) in Plymouth, Massachusetts. [1] In Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines, Mary W. Ferris reported the birthdate as 22 January 1658;[2] the 10-day difference is apparently due to her accounting for the 10-day date shift when the calendar was changed in 1752.

Mary married John Rickard, son of John Rickard, in Plymouth in about 1678. There has been some uncertainty as to whether Mary Cooke married that John Rickard or his first cousin John Rickard, the son of Giles Rickard. Both men had wives named Mary. In an article entitled "Which John Rickard married Mary Cooke?" in the August 1983 Mayflower Quarterly,[3] Eugene Stratton presented evidence that Mary Cooke's husband was John the son of John. As described by "jrich" in a personal genealogy page, Stratton based this conclusion primarily on a comparison of signatures.[4]

Children

John Rickard and Mary Cooke are recorded as the parents of seven children. All but the last two named are listed in Plymouth Vital Records:[5]

  1. John Rickard, born 26 February 1679.[6] He apparently died before February 1684.
  2. Mercy Rickard, born 3 February 1682. [7] Married Ignatrius Cushing.
  3. John Rickard, born 3 February 1684. [8] Married Sarah.
  4. Mary Rickard; not in Vital Records, but named in her father's will[9] "1688: Mary, daughter of Mary Rickard [baptized]." Married Timothy Morton.
  5. Ester (or Hester) Rickard, born 1 April 1691. no further information.
  6. Elizabeth Rickard; born about 1694; not in Vital Records, but named in her father's will.[9] Married Ebenezer Doggett.
  7. James Rickard, born 25 or 26 September 1696. Married Hannah Howland.

Death

Mary's husband John Rickard made his on 20 April 1711, and his estate was inventoried 20 June 1712. His will provided bequests Mary, sons John and James, and daughters Mercy [married name not legible], Mary Rickard, Hester Rickard, and Elizabeth Rickard. [9]

Mary died, not long after her husband, on 28 August 1712. She is buried near him, at Burial Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Her gravestone inscription reads: [22]
