The Name of His Father

The Marquis of Ruvigny and Raineval was unable to identify a father for Master William Mudie of Breckness but he did venture the following opinion: "Gilbert Mudie . . . . . married, before 20 January 1544, Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew Halcro of that Ilk in Orkney, and was doubtless the father of William Mudie of Breckness and Melsetter." The Moodie Book: 11 It now appears certain, however, that Master William Mudie of Breckness was the son of another man of the same name. He and his father are noticed in a summons that was issued by the Scottish Privy Council on 10 May 1569. Old Lore Miscellany10: 36-42

The Name of His Mother

It seems quite likely that Master William Mudie of Breckness was that son of Kattrine Sinclair who purchased one half of the lands of Leirquoy in Outer Stromness from Johne Robsoun on 27 May 1554.The probability of this being the case is suggested by the deed of sale, where the vendor refers to the purchaser as his" weilbelovit broder William Mudy". Chamberlain of the Crown Lands of Orkney

William Mudy, Chamberlain of Orkney, was in Edinburgh on 21 August 1559, where he is noticed in the witness list of two deeds which were recorded in the Protocol Book of Mr. Gilbert Grote Protocol Book of Mr. Gilbert Grote, 1552-57 (William Angus, Edinburgh, 1914), numbers 182 and 184 on p. 40 He was still acting as Chamberlain of Orkney in 1563 RSCRS XIX: 231 and he is noticed as Chamberlain again on 1 August 1565 RPCS: 289

Provost of the Cathedral Church of Orkney

William Mudie succeeded Malcolm Halcro as Provost of the Cathedral Church of Orkney: "succeeding Halcro in the Provostrie came William Mudy, who held office for about three years, when, in 1574, he was followed by Alexander Dick." Kirkwall in the Orkneys, p. 226

Commission of Enquiry in Shetland

Master William Mudie of Breckness and William Henderson, Dingwall Pursuivant, were at Tingwall in Shetland on 4 February 1577 to hear the complaints made by the islanders against Laurence Bruce of Cutmalindie. [Peter D. Andersen, Robert Stewart Earl of Orkney Lord of Shetland 1533-1593 (John Donald, Edinburgh, 1982), p. 96] They presented their findings to the Regent Moray at Holrood House on 24 April 1577. According to the Reverend Doctor Hew Scott, William Moodie of Breckness and Melsetter was minister at Walls and Flotta in 1585. He says that he set his benefice "in long takis" to his son and successor in this parish, with consent of the bishop, and died before July 1614. Fasti, p. 255

Charter for The Mansion House of Breckness in the Outertown of Stromness

At Kirkwall on 10 September 1565, Oliver Sinclair, son and one of the heirs of the deceased Robert Sinclair of Breckness, and 'dominus' of the pricipal messuage mansion, and one merk land thereof, sells to his well-beloved friend and kinsman [1] Mr. William Mudy of Donra [2] the aforesaid principal messuage or mansion and merkland of Brecknes, lying in the Wttirtoun (Outertown) of Stromness and sheriffdom of Orkney, with consent of Robert Sinclair, his son and apparent heir, for a certain sum of money. Wadset for the land in Lyking

On 29 June 1590 he had a wadset for a three penny halfpenny land "lyand in toune off Lyking, in the parochin off Southsandwik" from Magnus Lowtit of Lyking. The wadset deed was witnessed by Thomas Mudy and Adam Mudy and others. Records of the Earldom of Orkney

He sells his land at Dunra in Caithness

On 8 May 1593 Master William Mudie sold his land of Dunra in Caithness to Patrick, Earl of Orkney, in exchange for an annualrent from the Bow of Lopness on Sanday, and the Bow of Walls, Ryssay, Brimes and Osmundway on the island of Hoy. NRS: E341/68 Sixty-four years later, on 18 March 1657, the annualrent he received from Earl Patrick was inherited by his great-grandson James Mudie of Melsetter. Inquisitionum Ad Capellam

A date and place of death has not been identified for Master William Mudie of Breckness, here treated. According to the Marquis of Ruvigny and Raineval, he died before 30 June 1597. The Moodie Book

According to the Reverend Doctor Hew Scott, William Mudie of Breckness and Melsetter married Catherine Sinclair. Fasti, p. 255 The Marquis of Ruvigny and Raineval also called her Catherine Sinclair, The Moody Book: 14 although she is noticed as Katherine Sinclair in a charter dated 16 August 1591. Note 1: It is supposed that the late Bishop of Orkney referred to here was George Graeme, who was translated to the bishopric of Orkney on 26 August 1615 and renounced his rights thereto on 11 February 1639.

Note 2: If the word "grandsire" used here is equated with the word "grandsher" then it might be supposed that the man named James Moodie, here mentioned, was Mr. William Mudie's great-grandson. On the other hand, if the word "grandsire" is equated with the word "guidsire" then it might be supposed that James Moody was his grandson. In this regard it should perhaps be noticed that Mr. William Mudie of Breckness may have died before 30 June 1597, The Moodie Book and that his great-grandson, James Mudie, son of Frances Mudie of Breckness, was not born until 1615.

And concerning the kirk of Wallis, the personage teindis therof ar sett in long takis to umquhile Adam Mudie be umquhile Mr. William Mudie his father, person of Wallis, with consent of Bishop Dean and chapter ; and so the titulat of thois teindis served the cure himself during his liyfetyme, being minister at Wallis ; and eftie his deceas, his airis payed to the minister at Hoy for coming to the kirk of Wallis, and serving the cure ther, now and then, quhat they pleased, and the kirk had no constant stipend till the unioun [Note] forsaid. Note: William Mudy was evidently the brother uterine of Johne Robsoune. It follows that he was the son of Kattrine Sinclair. Johne Robsoune's half of Leirquhy was subsequently inherited by William Mudy's grandson, Francis Mudie of Breckness, NRS: GD217/4

28 October 1576: Lord Robert Stewart, feuar of Orkney and Shetland, Dame Jeane Kennedy his spouse, and Lord Henrie Stewart their son arid apparent heir, ' fear of the samyn ' (with consent of his father as tutor and governor to him), grant a nineteen years' tack to Olipheir Sinclair, son of the de- ceased Edward Sinclair of Strome, ' takkisman and kyndlie tennent and possessour of the landis eftir following,' and to Elizabeth Logane, his spouse, for assisting the granter's jurisdiction, tenants, and privileges with his body and friends ' as he lies promesit us,' and for the sum of £200, together with ' ane horse haiknay,' worth £40. The follow- ing are the lands and the duties to be paid for them : — the 6d. land of Skoknes in Rowsay with the mill and holm thereof (one barrel ' meitt ' butter) ; the lands of Sandis in Deirnes (20 merks money) ; the lands of Grcmisquoy in Sanct Olave parish (5/) ; Stenbister in Sanctandrois parish (one barrel butter and 4 meils beir) ; Garth in Sanctolave (l barrell butter) ; also all other duties and dew service, ' usit and wont.' 29 September 1551: Registered agreement between Robert, bishop of Orkney, and Y McKy, son to Donald of Far with Master William Mudy his curator whereby, as Donald’s lands are in the hands of the Queen because he died bastard without lawful heirs, and as the Governor has consented that Y should have the lands for a composition of 4000 merks Scots – a sum he cannot pay – the barony of Far and other lands, holden of the Crown or other overlords, are to be the bishop’s heritably; but when 1000 merks are paid, the barony of Ardurnes shall be resigned to the bishop or elect of Caithness, or the Governor, for a new presentation to Y, and similarly Strathnaver, holden of the bishopric of Moray, shall be resigned on receipt of the second 1000 merks, Far and other lands when 2000 merks are paid; provided always that McKy cause the bishop to have the revenue until the 4000 merks are paid, his obligation being reduced as the instalments come in.
