OBITUARY:
Laid to Rest – June 22, 1895 (LC Commercial)
—Mrs. Mathilde Veazey Reid, mother of Messrs. D. J., A. L., Andrew J. and Alfred J. Reid, died at 7 o'clock last Tuesday evening after an illness of five months, at the home of her son, Mr. Andrew J., corner of Moss and Pine Streets, at the advanced age of 71 years, 3 months and 16 days. Mrs. Reid was laid to in the Catholic Cemetery Wednesday evening at 5 o'clock in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends, to whom the Commercial extends its sympathy and condolence.
A Tribute.—June 1895, LC Echo
—Mrs. Matilda (Mathilde) Reid was born in St. Martin's Parish in A. D., 182a, and died at the home of one of her sons, A. J. Reid, June 18, 1895, aged 71 years. She leaves four sons, D. J., A. J., A. L., and Alfred J. to mourn her untimely demise. She loved her children with a true mother's affection, and spent her life in toil and self-denial for their comfort. Though they are stricken in heart, they should rejoice in the certainty of her present and eternal happiness, and gratefully acknowledge to their Lord his goodness in so graciously showing them through the beautiful life and calm, serene death of their mother how perfect is His sustaining grace at all times. We rejoice that we have known so long one whose life was ruled by love; a love which made her dumb as to the failings of others, and generous of loving deeds and words. Her gentle hands were ever ready to help the needy, and her heart opened to every call of distress. She loved her church with true devotion, and to work for it was her joy. "Diligent in business, fervent in Spirit, serving the Lord." We wonder not that when she sudden call of the bridegroom came her lamp was found trimmed and burning, and she had only to enter into the joy of here Lord, and those who are left can devoutly and rejoicing say for her: "Oh grave, where is thy victor? Oh! Death, where is thy sting? Thanks be unto God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." All that was left mortal of our friend and mother, Mrs. Mathilda Reid, was conveyed to its last resting place last Wednesday evening in the Catholic Cemetery. She was placed beside her daughter, Eugenie Hutchings, in the Catholic Cemetery.
DIED.—Reid, June 19, 1895, Lake Charles American,
—The deceased was the mother of Messrs. Alexander, Kinney, Fred and Jack Reid. For some time past she had made her home with the family of the latter and at which place she died after being confined to her bed for five long months. She was a native of St. Martinsville, LA., but the greater part of her life was spent in this city where her husband, long since deceased, was one of the prominent business men and trusted officials of Calcasieu Parish for years. Since her childhood days she had been a devoted member of the Catholic Church, from which place the funeral occurred this evening. Besides the four sons, she leaves a large number of grandchildren and neat relatives in this city to mourn the loss of a loving mother and grandmother, to whom, along with their many friends in this city, The American joins in extending sympathy. To her the golden morn has come. "Leave have their time to fall, And flowers to wither at the north wind's breath. And stars to set, but all Thou hast all seasons for --- own, Oh! Death.
