Alexander of Menteith (d. 1297 x 1304), son of Mary I, Countess of Menteith and Walter Bailloch Stewart, her husband, was a Mormaer or Earl of Menteith for a most of the 1290s. He married a lady named Matilda (Maud),[7] a daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn, [8] and together they had the following children:

  1. Alan, Earl of Menteith, who succeeded his father as Earl.[9]
  2. Peter, who in 1296 was a hostage in England with his brother Alan. He accompanied King Edward to Flanders, and took part in the French campaign of 1297, where he may have been killed.[10]
  3. Murdach, who became Earl of Menteith.[10]
  4. Alexander, styled as brother of Murdach in a charter to Gilbert Drummond.[10]
  5. Malise, who had a charter from Robert I of the lands of Ballygillachy.[8]
  6. Margaret de Menteith, wife of Alexander de Abernethy.[11]
  7. Ellen, recently identified as the wife of William Ferrers, 1st Baron Ferrers of Groby (d. 20 March 1324/5).[8]

4. ROBERT (-before Aug 1244). "Gilebertus comes de Strathern" donated "ecclesiam de Madernin" to Inchaffray by charter dated to [1199], witnessed by "Malisio fratre meo, Mathilde comitissa, Willelmo et Ferthed et Roberto filiis meis…"[710]. ...

m --- (-after 1247). The name of Robert’s wife is not known. A charter of her son "M. comes de Stratherin" dated 1247 refer to the rights "in vita comitisse matris nostre" and provides for after her death[722]. Robert & his wife had [six] children:

  • a) [FERGUS .
  • b) MALISE (-in France [before 23 Nov] 1271, bur Dunblane). His parentage is confirmed by the charter dated 1247 under which "M. comes de Stratherin" confirmed the donations made by "Gilberti avi nostri et…bone memorie Roberti patris nostri comitum de Stratherin" to Inchaffray Abbey[725]. He succeeded his father as Earl of Strathearn. - see below.
  • c) GILBERT (-after 1268).
  • d) HUGH (-after 12 Dec 1257).
  • e) ANNABELLA ([1230/40] [m firstly[, as his second wife,] JOHN of Lestalrig, son of ---.] m [secondly] ([1251/60]%29 PATRICK [II] Graham, son of [DAVID [III] de Graham & his wife Agnes ---] (-killed in battle Dunbar 28 Apr 1296).
  • f) MARY (-after 1284).
