About Matthew Wallace, Resident of Manokin in Colonial Maryland
MATTHEW WALLACE Resident of Manokin in Colonial Maryland
Spurious Pedigree
At least three published pedigrees claim that Matthew Wallace, here treated, was born in 1640, at Raphoe in County Donegal, Ireland. Two of these pedigrees claim that he was the son of John Wallace and Margaret Thompson, or Thomson, both of whom are said to have been born in Glasgow, Scotland, and one claims that his parents were married there on 25 February 1628. 1. WikiTree 2. Our Family Tree 3. Montgomery and Rowntree Families and Genealogy A fourth pedigree claims that he was born at Glasgow in Scotland. 4. rootsweb
It may only be coincidence, because the birth years do not match exactly, but three of the pedigrees already mentioned seem to be claiming that Matthew Wallace, here treated, was that son of John Wallace, Maltman in Glasgow and his wife Margaret Thomson whose baptism was registered at Glasgow on 5 February 1638. It should be noticed, however, that their son Matthew is not mentioned in his mother's last will and testament dated 7 December 1653. By this deed Margaret Thomson appointed overseers for her three youngest children, viz. William Wallace, who was older than Matthew, and Daniel Wallace and Elizabeth Wallace, both of whom were younger than him. If her son Matthew had still been alive then she would also have appointed an overseer for him, for he too would still have been under twenty-one years of age. In view of this circumstance it seems reasonable to suppose that her son Matthew must have died before 7 December 1653. If this is the case, as seems more than just likely, then Matthew Wallace, here treated, cannot be the son of John Wallace and Margaret Thomson.

- This particular lineage of Wallaces, including the immigrant from Switzerland, links to the Elderslie/Craigie Wallaces identified by Horace Hayden in his 1891 VIRGINIA GENEALOGIES. Hayden's VIRGINIA GENEALOGIES cross-references nicely to Charles Rogers' 1889 BOOK OF WALLACE. Going to your linked reference and following the trail of terminal SNPs you will find the 11 closely related branches by Big Y 700 testing. The common male Wallace parent of these branches clearly lived in Scotland not later than about 1600.
