Maurice Denys, of Olveston

Esquire, of Olverston and Earthcott, Gloucestershire. Sheriff of Gloucestershire, son and heir of Sir Gilbert Dennis of Siston, Knight of the Shire and Sheriff by his second wife, Margaret Russell.

Maurice was a ward of Sir Edward Stradling, as his father died when he was twelve, and a full record of his birth and baptism is included in a 1431 inquisition at Tetbury. Maurice was born into the Denys family who "provided more sheriffs for Gloucester than any other."

Maurice married Katherine Stradling and they had two sons when she was only 14, Sir Walter and John, before she died at a young age. Maurice would remarry to Alice Poyntz, the daughter of Nicholas from Iron Acton, Gloucestershire, about 1437. They had three sons and four daughters; Hugh, Maurice, Francis, Isabel, Jane, Emme and Alice.

Due to his mother remarrying a younger man, Stradling's nephew, after his father's death, due to Stradling's insistence, Maurice was never able to enjoy his inheritance.

Maurice was buried in the chancel of Olverston parish church, St Mary's.
